Landing gear operation

Hello everyone. We just purchased our first fifth wheel and learning our way around it. Our Jayco Eagle HT 23.5 came equipped with a category 24 marine battery. It is fully charged however we cannot operate the electric landing gear using the battery, the motor clicks sort of like a car starter does when the battery is dead.

The battery tested fine at a local battery shop. It is 4 years old. Should this be a category 28 battery? I presume that the landing gear motor can be used with battery power.

Thanks

Rick and Linda

Check the battery voltage with a meter while operating the landing gear. Does the landing gear operate when connected to shore power (110volts)?

I think a good battery will operate your gear ( slow ) but check for corroded terminals , voltage of battery, etc. . My 5er uses 2 in parallel so I really have no idea. I replaced both at about 4 years as one had low voltage.
Next changeout may go to (2) 6volts in series.

Thank you for the replies. I checked the battery and it wasn't quite fully charged. After a slow charge overnight the battery does operate the landing gear...very slow but it works. Voltage drops very quickly. The battery is 4 years old, may be time for a replacement.

With shore power the landing gear motor works fine. I'm going to see what the motor draws, just for my own entertainment.

If theirs room I would run dual 12v batteries.

Our 5'r is 2 years old now. Since we have a spot for it where we live, we keep her plugged into a 30A circuit. Then it's typically a drive to the campsite and full hookups, so our battery is charging all the time. Reading about the landing gear, I discovered the Jayco manual suggests keeping the battery charged and to use shore power when possible. I'm able to run the landing gear on battery alone and it's half as fast. I think if it dipped down a few volts it may not work at all. Same goes for the slideouts. Sounds like you're due for a new battery. Might as well get a nice one while you're at it and make sure the battery disconnect is ON when you're not plugged in. Good Luck

snip..."Should this be a category 28 battery?"

It'll be a group 27 battery, if it's about 13" long. A group 24 will be just under 11" long.
I'd think yours is the bigger of the two.
