Lippert Slide problems

Yesterday when we checked into our weekend park, the curb slide acted strange going out. My wife mentioned it and when we attempted to move it in a little the same problems was evident that I posted about in the above thread, (post 1, and 12-15). I knew the bolt was sheared again and this morning I opened her up and found BOTH bolts sheared, one was still in place but broken.
I had a supply and it was a quick repair to remove and replace them. Back in business.

How many times have you had the bolt shear. I remember reading about you having that issue before. Guess I've been lucky over the years. Have just had to do a few adjustments.

I know my shear bolts are in the enclosed underbelly. Are yours, and if so did you cut a quick access to get to them? I'm debating making an access panel just in case, and to make life easier if it happens.

Reason I asked is mine didn't, although I've already looked with a camera into the underbelly at the drive shaft to see where one would need to go. I only have an access panel right at the motor, but not the shaft between the 2 rails which have shear bolts as well I believe.

Is the new bolt "Grade 8" or just a colored bolt?

They are grade 8 which was what was originally there. As stated mine came with an access hole on each side.

Norty, care to venture an opinion on "why"? Curb side is the smaller of the two big slides and I'd expect the big one with the kitchen bits to be the problem child. We've yet to have any issues with either slide.

I'm not Norty but I've had similar occurrences. I have not had an issue for the last two years. The first time it happened to me I had it repaired by an RV tech who showed me how to do the repair as I have done a couple of times. His suggestion was to relieve the pressure on the bolt after bringing in the slide by giving the out button just a tap after bringing in the slide. I am not sure if this is the reason I have made it two years or not. I am more inclined to chalk it up to s**t happens

My thought is they need to be torqued down to 120 fp. Not sure if that's the problem but I bought some replacements today.

I have a question, but it would likely take a mechanical engineer to answer it. I wonder if the issue is the grade 8 bolts. I remember many years ago that Ford had a recall of a bunch of vehicles due to grade 8 bolts being used to install bumpers. The design called for a 'standard' bolt, but they had run out, so the assembly line used grade 8 bolts, thinking they were better. Well, if I remember correctly from many years ago, the issue was the grade 8 bolts could be tightened to a higher level, and they could 'hold' much tighter, but they 'sheared' much easier than the 'normal' bolt. All the grade 8 bolts had to be changed to non-hardened variety because a small hit to the side would shear the bumpers off the cars.
Can a mechanical engineer chime in here and tell me I'm really stupid about this? It was a long time ago, and I'm likely not remembering this correctly.

Good point. When I first posted about this a few years back many gave me heat for using grade 8's but that is what the factory used.
As expensive as they are, I can't see Jayco using them if they are not warranted.

This is an excellent discussion. My inclination is to follow Jayco recommendations. The bolt may not be subjected to sudden stress like an impact but the shear from the slide motor start may be more "gradual".
Looking for some more input from you folks that know stuff.

I have three slides on our unit and so far have not had a problem. I do try to keep everything lubed. As far as I can tell, I do not have access to the motors without cutting out an access from the bottom. That may be next on my list when I go in for maintenance, to cut some out and get some replacement bolts to have on hand. Our unit has been used probably every month for almost 3 years now without a burp! Probably just jinxed myself!
