I added a second shelf by putting one small 2x2 on each side then a small 1/4" piece of plywood for the base of the shelf, thus giving me a second shelf.

How did you attach the 2X2's to the walls?

There's screws and glue holding. You only have to go into the cabnet wall about 1/2" or so with adding the glue. The screws probably would be enough but I like a little added stringht to it.

I was thinking of doing this but the screws were my concern. I will try it now and I'll use liquid nails.

Yes screws are a consern as long as you don't go any deeper into the walls than 1 1/4" I've put all kinds of pics up all over my walls to make our 5ther more like home. Good luck in your shelf mods.

You said to use screws that are not longer then 1 1/4" what size for finished side of cabinets the side that face the bed. That is very thin.
