My First Blow Out - Need New Tires

Just had my first Blow-Out on the way home from camping. The tires I have are almost 4 years old and have some minor cracks on the sidewalls...

Can anyone recommend good trailer tires ...? I am thinking to get like G rated but then maybe this would be overkill.

I have 2006 Jayco Eagle 281 RLS current tires are ST235/80R16 and rated E.

How about these - GoodYear Endurance

In Arizona lots of guys are switching to truck tires, we us E 10 ply 16s.They also are speed rated!

You should look at the Sailun G rated tires. Best bang for the buck IMHO

Look interesting...I will call our local tire shop and see if they can get me Sailun G tires... $ 165 each is not that bad...

I got mine from simpletire.com

Shipped to my house and I took them to my local tire shop to install them. Be aware that there are 2 different s637 tires. One is an LT, the other is ST. I believe the ST is 235/80 and the LT is 235/85. Not much difference but I believe the LT has a higher speed rating

Either way, make sure your rims are 110 psi compatible.

I have the new GY endurance tires on mine, so far so good. I think they outweighed the tow max by 9 pounds each. Comparing the unmounted tires next to each other the side wall on the endurance was substantially stiffer.

Here is couple of pictures to illustrate the event...

Just came back from a 7300 mile trip (about 3500 on the 2012 Jayco RLTS31), pulled with a Ford F250 6.7 liter diesel, with Goodyear Endurance tires. Really like them... they are "N" rating (87 mph), so feel very comfortable at 70 mph or so. Seem to be a great improvement over all the 65 mph tires for trailers.

Time will tell ... these are new from Goodyear, coming out in January, 2017.

Hard to deny the track record Saliun tires have earned but GY Endurance appears to be as much a contender and there's a dealer network that can be there if needed.

I don't feel there can ever be "overkill" in respect to getting quality tires.

GY Endurance is good for 2850 lbs @ 85 PSI, so if your rims aren't rated for 110PSI then Endurance may be the way to go.

I went with Maxxis E rated tires over my stock Raniers within the first 500 miles of ownership. I have about 3500 miles on them now and so far I am very happy with them.

Looks like you escaped major damage. Were you using a TPMS?

I just got lucky... heard a whoosh sound, looked at the rear view mirror and saw flat... I was just outside the town on the wide road with little traffic...so I was able to stop within couple hundred of yards...

No TPMS...just being vigilant and paying attention...

Agree on good tires. One blow out can cost you the price of a good set of tires.

I have GY Endurance and put over 4K miles on them so far, they have been great. I have also been hearing great things about the Endurance line and seeing more and more trailers with them. About time a trailer tire is made in the USA.

Ok, I think I made the decision. Please be patient and hear me logic before start trowing stones at me:

1. I forgot to mention that when we were pulled on the side of the road and my girl was in the middle of the street setting up cones, CHP drove right by us and never even stopped to check or harass us. No big deal...I spend a lot of time riding motorcycle and Jeep solo on the trails...and learned to be prepared get myself out of the the jam...but it's kind of funny how they only stop you when you did something wrong...and when help needed they just look the other way...

2. We got really lucky and not suffered major (actually any) damage to the trailer. Today when I looked close up at the tire it was different than others. In my defense I bought this 5th Wheel about 6 month ago. This is my first trailer of any kind ...ever. Load rating - D, Max psi - 65 ( I had this puppy inflated to 85) and manufacture date was Dec 2005. That's like using old condom for a party balloon...no wonder it blew....

3. Les Schwab guys quoted me couple of tires: First was SAILUN at $190.00 per tire, then GEOSTAR at $ 236.25 per tire. Both required 110psi rated rims but we could not find any markings on the rim to figure the rating. So 4 employees later it was decided that it's rated to 85 psi and I could totally run both tires mentioned above with my current rims at 85 psi and be fine...hmm...that's probably true and I could, but I am not paying $ 230 per tire and run it half flat.... No thank you.

3. Buying new rims out of questions as I plan to sell this trailer in a year or two and upgrade to newer model...and bigger...

4. So I decided to go with GY Endurance....at $ 144.16 each. Will call LS tomorrow and ask to order them for me...

So that's that. I learned more about the trailer tires in the past couple of days that I ever thought I will need in my life time. THANK YOU for everyone's input and feedback... it was a tremendous support and help.

Now I need to go work the streets to make some quick cash for the new tires....

When I bought mine I found a manufactures rebate online that saved about $40 off the set. I think they will serve you well. Before they are all mounted compare the new ones to the old, you will see they are much heavier.

Had GY Endurance for about 800 miles now. They are holding up really well and I am happy for the price I paid. Will keep you all updated, but I think this will be a good tire that could be replaced more frequently at a manageable cost...

I changed to Maxxis 8008 E rated tires. I had 2 blowouts 10 miles apart on the original Towmax tires. Needed tires on the road and had to buy GY Marathons to get home. Changed them out right away to the Maxxis. The Maxxis tires did not even squat when the RV weight was put on them. I have around 7K miles on them and they are performing well.

If you got 12 years out if the existing tires, I'd say they were pretty good tires (no matter what the brand).
