Need Tire Advice - 361 REQS

We are just starting our 4th summer with our camper and we had one blow out and another tire is starting to peel. We were under 3,000 miles. What tires are people putting on? I had the Good Year Marathon ST235 R16 - saw a thread about Goodyear Endurance but would any of you recommend those or how about 14 ply steel tires or will that just shake the heck out of my stuff?

I have the S637's on and yes, they are stiff and shake things in the trailer. No issues in 25,000+ miles though.

I went to Endurance on our smaller rig. I like them.

Hinch,

I have the same floor plan as you and I put Maxxis M8008 ST235/80R16E 16" They're rated for 3,420#@ 80PSI. I have had them for 3 1/2 years now and I'm very happy with them.

The S637 is an excellent tire, but I believe to get the 3,640# rating they require 110 PSI. Make sure your rims are rated to handle 110 PSI. I know my rims were only rated for 80 PSI. That's why I went with the Maxxis (didn't want to spend the extra $ to upgrade the rims). Plus the Goodyear Endurance were fairly new to the market at that time so I also wanted to wait to see how people liked the Endurance.

Next tire change it will be between the Maxxis and Endurance.

Hope this helps.

Did you have to change your original rims for those tires?

Thank you for your information. I think you are correct in that mine are maxed at 80PSI - I wouldn't want to change the rims at this point.

I'm 50/50 on the rating for my rims. Jayco told me one thing, other places told me something different. I "think" they are T03's which aren't rated to 110#. I'm running them @ 100# and no issues to this point. I put the S637's on summer of '15. We use the trailer in the winter but it gets long runs as we go to the US SW. When I did the tires I didn't feel there was a reliable alternative in a lighter duty tire. Once failure costs more in damage than replacing all the tires with good ones.

Crawl under your trailer and take a look at the back of the rim. The rims should be stamped with a part # and you can go to the manufacturer's website and find out what they are rated for.

That's how I found out my rims were rated fro 80PSI, even though the trailer was shipped with 65PSI rated tires.

I upgraded my Rainier load range D (65PSI) tires to Carlisle Radial HD load Range E (80PSI) tires.

Sailun, commercial trailer tires and there cheaper than good year. you need a rim capable of 110 PSI. look on back of rim and looking at your tire size you should be good to go.

Goodyear Endurance here.
Had the 80# rims so that was my only choice.

I have a 361REQS and had Towmax, then Goodyear Marathon and now Maxxis 8008. Had 2 blowouts on the Towmax. Added the Goodyear because I was on the road and needed tires right away. Got home and took them off and added the Maxxis. I check the air pressure before a trip now and forget about the tires. I have a tire monitoring system and they run cooler and don't increase air pressure near what the last tires did. I have put a lot of miles on them and some of that on hot AZ roads.

The Maxxis are rated to 65mph, the Sailun's to 75mph. I usually run the speed limit if I'm on the interstates which means 75 for the most part. Other than that the Maxxis would certainly be a softer ride on the trailer contents with the 10ply vs 14ply.

Tires should not be considered part of the suspension; running them lower than max causes excessive flexing in the sidewalls and generates heat, which leads to tire failure

The Rainier tires which came on a lot of Pinnacles were famous for developing baseball size 'blisters' on the sidewall of the tires

Our factory tires were the infamous TowMax. After 2 blowouts in 75 miles we replaced them with Goodyear G614’s. The original rims were Tredit T03’s which are 80psi (and are for sale). I used them for about a year at 100psi. When I couldn’t stand it any longer and upgraded to a rim that was identical in appearance but rated to 110psi (HySpec). I now keep them at 110# and have about 9k miles on them with no problems.
The G614 is expensive but I picked them as they were getting a reputation as very durable. The G’year Endurance was just emerging and I wanted a tire with a bit more experience.
As a footnote I had a TPMS which alerted me to both failed tires and my 5th suffered no damage. My neighbor was not so fortunate as his blowout went unnoticed and did considerable damage to the well and surrounding trim until he was alerted by another motorist.

They are part of the suspension, otherwise they'd be solid rubber. You can run tires at less than the max air pressure and the load capacity is derated. There is a minimum pressure too though.

Check your truck, I would expect that if it's a heavy duty one then it calls for different front and rear pressures with the same tires all round.

X2, all 4 of mine had the bubbles. Tredittire (Jayco supplier) replaced all 4 at no cost to me after contacting them directly . This was in 2015, still waiting for a reply from Jayco though SMH.
