New 5th wheel owners

Hello all. We recently purchased a 2019 Jayco Northpoint 381FLWS. We are seasonal campers in Vermont and have transitioned from a TT to 5th wheel. We will be getting a tow vehicle sometime soon as we plan on traveling. I'll be looking through these forums to find some helpful tips and pointers on the 5th wheel life. Thank you in advance.

Welcome and congratulations on your Northpoint. When considering your tow vehicle, please strongly consider a dually. Lots of info and recommendations on this forum. Good luck!

As I am a Dodge guy, I'm looking at a 3500 dually. I have been told I can tow with a SRW, but I believe the ride and stability will be better with a dually. Thank you for the recommendation

I pull our 375 Northpoint with a dually. Go big or go home! You won't regret it. It's WAY more stable in the rear than with a SRW. Of you're pulling it with a SRW now and go to a dually, you'll wonder why you didnt do it sooner.
Btw, a year ago DW and I had the discussion of keeping our 375 or trading up for a different floor plan and the 381 was the one we would have traded to. NICE unit, but we like ours, haven't had just a small few minor issues with ours and its al.ost paid for, so we decided to keep what we got.
Welcome to the forum and enjoy!!

Welcome, also from WI. We also went from a TT to FW and it was the best thing we ever did. The forum and contributors have been a great asset to us.

Our 2021 Eagle 321RSTS just arrive last week, cant wait for spring to get out there. We bought our first 5th wheel in 2019 and found we love it so much we went bigger so we can go further! This is a great forum to get a lot of questions answered and lots of different opinions that are really helpful!
Good luck, many happy trips!

Congrats and welcome to the family! A google search yielded the GVWR is a touch over 16k# and I expect a dually would be the order of the day as “Spring” suggests. Our 5th scaled at 13k# (loaded) and while we are not overloaded I feel that much more weight would make for an “uncomfortable” tow. Our “empty” weight is 11.4k and the GVWR is 15.2k. Another piece of data is we tow with a Blue Oval 350.

Welcome from the Georgia mountains! Even though people often come here to the Blue Ridge area for a vacation, since we live here we are leaving this Wednesday for the Grand Circle of parks including the Grand Canyon.

We really like our 2016 North Point 311RKTS Its in great shape for a five year old 5'er and it woke up nicely from its winter slumber. We will leave our home with temps in the low 20's and have great faith for our 6 week trip.

The folks in this forum are just like the awesome people we meet on the road.

God Speed y'all

I have a 2020 North Point 383FKWS and use a SRW to pull. Other than upgrading the factory tires, had no problems, but I am real close to the payload capacity at the hitch. 4200 lb max and I’m running about 4100. If you go to a DRW (depending on model and transmission ) you will be around 6000. The total weight will not be an issue with the diesel but hitch weight will come into play.

We love our 2016 Northpoint 5W 361 REQS...
Get good tires at first chance,, our original ones gave us a few bubbles on a long trip. I now have Goodyear Endurance.
We also put 2nd battery in to help on voltage drop when lowering jacks and leveling during set up.
We have never had probs w slides, tho some on forum have.
Sudden nite wind took long awning off one nite. I now roll mine in halfway or more even on still nites, and w any daytime wind that gives it a whip, I come in to about 3 feet at least, or all they way in.
More recently, after burning out reverse polarity fuses on Converter, I lined my battery box w foam sheets you put in tool box trays...less likely to arc battery with wrench or cables when removing to recharge or replace.

All these things you learn as you go. Enjoy the adventure.

Welcome!

We have a 2020 317 RLOK, left VT 12\15\20 for full time RV life! We are traveling across US for next several years. Strongly suggest at least a 1 ton truck and a dually is preferable for that size trailer. Do your research, and don't listen to the car salesman! It is amazing how many are not knowledgeable when it comes to towing capacity, weight, etc. You were very smart to purchase your trailer before the truck! Good luck! BTW, we found our used dually in Springfield, VT. Excellent experience and LOVE the truck. Didn't even know the 5th wheel was back there!
