North Point 377 RLBH disc brake conversion

Getting started on my brake conversion. I purchased a kit from stop your trailer dot com.

Included in the kit:

disc brake rotors
brake calipers with pads
Brakerite hydraulic brake actuator
caliper mounting brackets
4 sets of bearings (inner and outer)
inner grease seals
Outer grease caps
Hydraulic line kit and fittings
Hardware, screws, zip ties
HBA mounting bracket

I’m starting on getting all the bearings packed and installed into the rotors

With those oil bath caps you could skip the grease and use oil. Probably too late, but that would be the time to go with US made Timkin bearings and races.

I have the same job to do on my 2017 Eagle 293RKDS. Just needing the time.

You may want to go with 1/4" main line to help with delay. Not sure if your actuator can be changed to 1/4". My Hydrastar could be just by ordering a different outlet fitting that is 1/4", which I did. Keep your lines as short as possible and limit 90° bends. Also having your actuator close as possible to the brakes helps with delay too.

[emoji30] too late now Earl! I wish I would’ve known that before I started. Btw, what kind of oil would I put in there?

FYI, that bearing packer is a POS. Broke before I could finish the first bearing. Should’ve known considering I only paid $7 for it. I thought it would make it through this job at the least. Oh well.

As far as the brake lines, the kit I have does indeed have 1/4” lines. Should be good to go on that.

On semi trailers we used gear lube. I believe Kodiak has a lube. No idea what it is. Could be special stuff or just gear lube.

Yeah those Packers are junk. I use this. One of these.

Mines 20 plus years old. Works great! The KD version is better than the Lisle version. They aren't all created equal!

North Point 377 RLBH disc brake conversion

Yeah, I wanted that kind but the auto parts store only had the kind I bought. Of course I was cheap and got the less expensive version.

I am considering putting the actuator in 2 places.

First, in the propane compartment on the driver side. Short electrical runs and easy to get brake lines under the frame.

Second, under the entry steps inside the MorRyde storage box. Short brake lines but long electrical runs. I read somewhere that the electrical run should be less than 25’ but I can’t seem to locate where I read it. I believe it was in some of the Titan literature. If I place it here, I eliminate the 1/4” main line and only have 3/16 lines

Bought one of these packers, has worked great for 4 years, fill it up, set it on the floor and apply a little foot pressure and its full.

I ended up packing all the bearings the old school way. Next time I need one, it’ll definitely be that type

I plan to mount my Hydrastar behind my entry steps. On the frame rail. Will be right at the first axle. I'd rather run longer wiring than brake tubbing. More tubing means more bends and possibly more fittings. All that does is make the system respond slower.
On wiring, use 10ga or larger. 8ga for power and ground would be ideal. I'm a fan of car stereo amp power cables. The others 10ga would be fine. Those are low amp leads.

I have a bearing packer similar to the one you used. I've had it at least 10 years! Guess the newer ones are cheaper plastic. I'll be following this install. Agree with Earl on the car audio amp power cables. I will be using similar gauge wire to install my work lights on my truck.

Don't follow the instructions and videos where they loop extra tubing! Always cut to length needed and flare. The extra tubing is a waste, causes delays and looks horrible.

Earl

I don’t have a flare tool and I have no experience making double flares. Luckily, either way I go, I won’t have to have any loops.

That Dacromet is sure perty. Hand packing isn’t all that hard, but you gotta use those 7mil or thicker nitrile gloves. Harbor Freight u get 50 for $10. Pack em all at one time inside covered roof. I was out in the open on our site picnic table. Big cardboard box flattened to keep from making a mess, but I did mine one at a time. Used lots of gloves.

Another thing about the brake line size, look inside the brass elbow to each caliper....the hole going in is very small, like 1/16”, so my lines are all 1/8” as the writing on the brake hose says. What does your rubber brake hose to the caliper say on the inside diameter?

Plus, our disc brakes repair is finally ready for a road test tomorrow. It’s been a long four days, and today was one last wheel work repack bearings and seal and my first ever bleed brakes session. It took 4x to each caliper to get all the air bubbles out and I’m confident tomorrow’s test should pass easily.

Tom, make sure you buy at least 3 32 oz cans of DOT 3 brake fluid. I thought 1 can was enough. I’m a rookie you can tell. 3 cans barely made it. You must refill the reservoir every two calipers! If you don’t, and bleed too much, you’ll get air back in the system. The Titan and lines will hold most of a 32 oz can.

So apparently, my Titan Brakerite II actuator came through my failure ok and didn’t hurt anything, as we continued 35 miles on an empty reservoir. I didn’t think to unplug it on the scene. I was told it could possibly hurt the pumps running with no fluid.

Oh, FWIW, I didn’t use the breakaway switch to activate the actuator for bleeding the brakes. That takes 20-25 lbs of force pulling that pin out and then reconnecting and didn’t want the DW to suffer through that repeatedly. So I hooked the pickup up for the DW to use the brake controller red button on signal with cell phone.

I always hand pack and have for many years. I don't use gloves so my hands get pretty greasy but I do them all at once then clean them before continuing (solvents and brake cleaner are good for that, prob not for health though)

Ran the cable under the frame and up to the battery box (sorry no pic)

Put all the connections in a junction box to make it neat.
