Onan 4500i

How do I hook my onan4500 I up to my Jacob Northpoint 377 RLBH. Do I use a dog bone and connect it to my shore power of cord and plug it into the 30 amp spot and thatís it or is it more involved than that

You need to install an automatic transfer switch to do it right.

You will likely need an adapter. I have used one like this one in the past and you can also get a similar adapter without a cord. However, I prefer a corded adapter to help (maybe) prevent damage to the generator's plug. ~CA

Is the Automatic transfer switch used so it automatically switches to the generator? If I don’t have a transfer switch at the moment can I just plug it in whenever we have power outage until I receive automatic transfer switch. How to I actually connect to rv ?

An automatic transfer switch is used more commonly on a motorhome which allows the generator to be started and power the RV without ever leaving the inside of the motorhome. Prior to when transfer switches were common in a motorhome, the RV'r would need to exit the RV and unplug from the shore power (if connected) and then plug into the plug at the generator.

So, short answer is that you don't need a transfer switch to allow the generator to provide power to your RV, just turn off all major power appliances (ie: the A/C) and then plug in the RV to the generator, start the generator and let it run a few minutes, then you can turn on the A/C. If one day you wanted a built-in generator and the convenience of not leaving the inside of the RV to use the generator, then the transfer switch would allow you to do that. Imo though, plugging into the generator will always have to occur with a portable generator which negates the value of a transfer switch. ~CA

I just looked up the generator you referenced. Looks like a very good generator and does not need the adapter I referenced earlier. So all you need to do is plug the RV into the generator and start it up and then enjoy.
