Ouch

My ford 2020 Superduty remote tailgate opened inadvertently while driving near Atlanta on I-75. Crushed the cargo door as there is only about 4 inches of clearance between the tailgate and the camper when the tailgate is open. Itís a known issue that the tailgate can open unexpectedly. Ford is fixing the damage to the tailgate and also paid for a replacement cargo door.
Ironically ford had sent me notices about the issue but asked the dealer about it when the truck was in for other service they clearly werenít interested in addressing it. If you get the notice from Ford donít ignore it and donít let the dealer dismiss it.

Just curious. Isn't there an indicator on the dash letting you know that it's opened? That's dumb on FORD's part if there isn't.

I am so sorry to see this. I had a 2017 Ram that had a tailgate issue and it punctured a hole in the discovery trailer v-nose wrap that I had in 2022 (and jostled the camping gear out of the truck bed when it happened). I did not know at the time that Ram was also having an issue with the tailgates opening. An 94 yr old gentleman ran a stop sign and totaled that truck (all were okay and maybe a blessing in disguise). I purchased a different Ram, different year. I have not had any problems with with this model. I know that doesn't solve your problems but praying that the issue can be resolved. Stick those repairs to FORD, I am shocked but glad to see that they are paying for repairs and replacement. Wishing you blessings!

Ford has a bunch of models with this tailgate problem. I know my 2023 F150 was recalled for it, but basically they said "if you have it happen in the next 10 years bring it in"

Ford is lucky it was 'only' the baggage door and not your actual camper wall. A dash light would be helpful, but when you're in transit noting a small dash light when you'd least expect to see it?? Your tailgate to auto open? I'd probably miss it.

My truck is not as Fancy. I don't even have assist lift. I gotta put that moderately heavy gate, especially with one hand, up and down with nothing but old-girl power.

GM had a recall for this issue recently. Never had it happen on my Ď22, but on that truck there was no indication it was open. Towing a FW you wouldnít know till this happened. My Ď24 at least notifies me.

Nice that Ford is helping out with this.

Our 2017 F250 PowerStroke had a recall for that same problem. Haven’t heard about a recall for the 2022 F350 though. There is a warning indicator that the tailgate is ajar but it’s one of the dozens of other dash warning lights and unless you are backing up (then you will get an audio warning and the camera will show the ground) you likely won’t notice it. If your keys are in your pocket with other stuff and you have the push button start, and the tailgate release gets double pushed, there’s nothing to stop it from coming down. If you are going down the road at highway speed and on a curve when this happens, you’re screwed. Hopefully it’s on a long straight away and you can pull over without damaging anything. Or, Ford could fix the problem…there’s that. How about a sensor that you have to be in park or going less than 10 miles an hour for the tailgate to release. That would be nice.

The remote tailgate release is standard on the 2024 Ford F250/F350/F450 Lariat. King Ranch, Platinum and Limited but not on the XL or XLT. Glad I ordered an XLT.

Mine is manual. Some things are best left to operate manually.

Same here. 25 years ago they hadnít invented remote tailgate openers. Just 50 pounds of steel that gives the arms a workout. But no recalls!

Thanks for the responses Iíve been out of pocket with some medical issues and havenít been able to respond There is a dash warning light but at 60 mph in Atlanta traffic there wasnít much I could do. Iím just thankful nothing was damaged and no one got hurt. Everything else will get worked out.

On my Ram there is no damping for the tailgate, so the alert is when a loud band is heard from the tailgate dropping...LOL I never had it happen, but several had commented on another forum how it was heard and felt.

I had an issue with my windshield wiper motor that Ford knows is a problem. When I got the recall notice I took it in and they said that they were back ordered. But since they were a shortage of the motors that when they go them in they would replace them as needed.

Needless to say I was not too pleased and spoke to them with much vigor. Lets see if I am out on the highway and it quits when its raining, knowing that they would change them as needed when the motor fails would not be of any value. I politely told them to change mine before I ended up with the failed motor on the highway. I continue to wonder if common sense has been flushed down the toliet with the newer generation.

As it relates to my tailgate, sometimes I do find myself hitting the wrong button on the key fob and the tailgate comes loose. But with the hard tonnoeu cover it stops the tailgate from opening and dropping down.

On my 2018 F-250, the unintended tailgate opening is considered a Customer Satisfaction Program and not a recall. My dealer told me that Ford would not authorize a repair until after it happened at least once.

My 2023 Lariat F350 has it. Never use it. I open the tailgate when I am behind the truck. Another useless sales gimmick in my opinion.

on both my 2022 and my current 2023 f150's the tail gate release takes 2 pushes (on either the remote or the dash button) I read that previous model years to that it only took 1 push to open the tailgate.

on my 2023 Powerboost, it has an electric tailgate so when it is moving up or down it beeps.

as far as wiper motor, one day I took the 2022 in for something (I forget what) and they happen to have a wiper motor in stock so they replaced it.

The biggest problem I have had with the 150's is on my 2022 on the passenger side, you will see how the AC box comes to a point near where the passengers feet goes, mine cracked and it dumped massive amounts of water all over the carpet. it started to smell like mildew and one day I noticed it one day when pulling out the mats to clean the sand out and the mat was stuck to carpet. removal showed black carpet was white with mold and soaking wet. The tech did not want to do the job, they kept pushing the time back, then they could not get the carpet as it was coming off the assembly line. Plus once they pull the dash to replace the AC box it will never be the same. When I bough it between discounts, rebates and Xplan I get nice prices so not in over my head when I sell them, and they had this 2023 power boost 4wd loaded demo that was driven by dealership owner sitting there for over $10K in discounts, I couldn't help myself .
