Overall Height Over 13'10"

A friend bought a just picked up a 2018 Jayco Eagle 317RLOK and tows it with a stock 2018 Ford F250 4X4 gasser. He stopped for gas and heard that scary sound of something scraping. Sure enough it was the front AC unit.

When he got where he was going he parked on level ground and checked the height at AC unit, it was over 13'10". The antenna and the rear AC unites were slightly over 13'1".

The front AC sticks up 15" above the roof I am guessing that they should have installed a low profile AC instead of the 15" one?

BTW, the space between his truck bed side rails and the bottom of the RV is just under 6". The dealer said that it needed that clearance to have enough space when he is on uneven ground.

Has anyone else experienced this?

My 2018 339FLQS is the same condition 13’-10” to top of AC unit while towing... Heard the same sound as I backed into shop. Luckily it was only a fluorescent light fixture. I would have never guessed it would be that high.

13' 10 " is over the 13'6" federal limit. If he hits anything overhead with his rv, he will be found liable and insurance may not cover him!

Whose problem is this, Dealer or Jayco?

He bought the trailer in FL and lives in PA which is where the trailer is now.

Stock truck, I know the fords sit a tad higher than most but 13'10" is way higher than normal. That would mean he is nose high when rolling down the road.

That sucks. According to Jayco's website the 317RLOK is 154.25" with the AC.

Yea he is sitting way too nose high. May need to lift the 5ver OR lower his hitch OR get a different hitch that sits lower in the bed OR ETC. He should look at his options. Not only is the increased height an issue, sitting nose high will put more of the camper's weight on the rear axle instead of being evenly spread.

Yep, mine is that way too. 13FT 6IN almost exactly. I watch clearance signs closely. FWIW if I were towing level it would be about 6in less.

I think there is a serious height problem. My height is 12' 10" on my 2016 28.5 RSTS and I have a 2017 3/4 ton 4x4 Dodge. I've got 9" between my bed rails and the camper. I think you need to take your unit back to the dealer after calling Jayco first and see what can be done. Good luck in your height problem.

My 2018 355MBQS is spec’d at 162” with the front A/C. This makes for a nervous travel. My dealer has offered to swap out to a low profile for just the difference being that the trailer is brand new. Why wouldn’t Jayco just put one on knowing how close it is to fed regulations. It would drop it about 7” depending on the unit.

So frustrating.

That's 13'6" which is legal height limit.

If it's over height when sitting level I would put pressure on dealer and Jayco for selling a unit that was not road legal. If it's legal sitting level then Jayco nor dealer are responsible.

You do not want me on a jury deciding this. If his truck was not stock, I would agree with you. But they are making the trailer to be pulled with a 3/4 ton truck... I am not sure his trailer would be level on any stock 3/4 ton truck.

I think every 5er should have low profile a/c on front but Jayco is only responsible for building a legal camper. They have no control over the vehicle mfg. but they should take this into consideration. Seams like the trucks are getting higher every year. If rv mfg's lower the height of the trailer to accommodate for the higher trucks you would not be able to stand up in them without hitting your head.

I went under a 13’ 7” clearance bridge in Virginia last year. I told everyone in the truck to duck... i was behind a semi so i felt good following behind but was still nervous...

I agree but why not add a margin of cushion in there by adding a low profile A/C.

I have to get mine on level ground connected to get actual measurements.

I recently had the dealer change out our forward AC to the low profile unit. They did this for the cost difference between the 2 units. The height on my 28.5 RSTS is now 12’ 6” when hitched to the TV. It appears to be a little more aerodynamic also.
