Packing Up In Rain?

So far we've only had to pack up the slides in clear weather, but in looking at next weeks weather and our reservation we may be packing it up in the rain.

Is there anything different we need to do as we shut it down and load up? Or, collapse the slides and pack up as usual before hitting the road?

My concern is about bringing water inside from the slides but maybe it's designed to not be an issue.

We always take towels and wipe down the sides and top of slide once we pull them in , if you don't you will have some water inside , not real difficult . Surprising the times we have pulled up in heavy rain it was not to bad to wipe down .

Not sure if it would matter for your unit, but I seen a video where they discuss raising/lower the front jacks to make water run off the slides before retracting them. Do you have slide toppers? Mine stay pretty dry with the toppers.

We just returned from a trip and we had to set up and break down in the rain.

In our 3 slide unit, the slide toppers collect rain so when we bring them in we start with just a half ft or so and stop to let the rain run off the slide topper. Then finish bringing it in. Wipe the sides on the inside if you have access. We don't on the ends of two of ours. Many times one of us go up on the roof if they are full of water and it's not raining and sweep them out with a brush.

I know thee are those that say,"Don't stop the slide except all the way in or out" , but we do it all the time with no problems to clear rain. I called Jayco early after we got rig about this and that is what they told me to.

Even with this hassle,I would not be without them.

It depends on where they are mounted on the camper. If they don't have enough fall from the camper to the outside end of the slide, water tends to pool in them in hard rains. Even if they do have a proper fall, they will pool up in hard rains.

If rain is predicted one thing I do is but my awnings away while they are dry and before rain comes.

If it is predicted, I will pick up everything outside and stow it and dump my tanks at night before bed if I have sewer at the site.

My wife would rather go up on the roof in the rain than bring them in the night before. Good idea though.

If you don't have slide toppers then you will get some water on the tops upon retract. While it will be limited it could cause an issue.

Agree that tilting the unit off level front to back will help. The squeegee trim on the roof will help limit the water taken in, but there will be still some.

I would bring in one side first see what accumulates on the floor and dry it up. Then the other side, but you won't be able to access the bunkhouse portion.

The reason I say could cause damage is the trim and woodwork in these units are MDF and make floor contact with the exception of the slides trim. All the cabinets, door trim and panels are not real wood and act like sponges with any water contact.

I will bring in everything the night before when rain is forecast for the AM departure. There is nothing worse IMHO than packing it all up wet only to have to unpack it all again at home to dry out and eliminate the mold and rust potential.

I just bring them in as they are because I'm not ending up a cripple trying to dry 2 huge slides 10 feet in the air. Does a little water get inside ? Sure, but I am not worried about it.

I always get up on the roof with a sham-wow orange towel and wipe off the top of the slide before it comes in. Not only does it absorb any water but also cleans off leaves, acorns, etc. that end up on top. If I had multiple slides or larger ones I would opt for the slide toppers.

I use Lippert slide out slickers. The wiper seals do a good job of removing water. The slickers have water troughs in them for the water to collect if any.

IMHO if the seals around your slide is air tight then it would also be water tight. The seal on top of the slide would squeeze the water off. Slide roof would be damp but not dripping wet.

If it's raining when we bring in the slides I just put a towel on both ends of the slide roof after we bring them in. Once home we remove towels deploy slides and let them dry while we clean out the TT.

In general I do not do anything special, and we have a hybrid with bunks too. I might tip the nose up or down and let the slide roof drain off a bit. But the seals do a good job, wiping most of the water off. I may get a little bit of water inside on the floor when we get home. But not much.

For the Bunks, I make sure the zippers are closed up, maybe give them a shake, then close her up. I have never had water inside from closing up the bunks wet.

A couple teaspoons of water on the linoleum should not hurt anything. I have to admit, I will wipe it up if I find any.

I Tip the TT enough to drain and pull them in. If worried about the MDF trim replace it with solid wood (oak or matching). Most roof pool a little bit but by tipping enough it will drain. Best way is to plan and prep departure ahead, but if no choice then the back/head will have a wet adventure unless you carry proper rain gear to avoid.
