parking on grass

Hi all. I am in the process of getting an RV carport to cover my new fiver at my house.

Question is: Is there anything wrong with parking the unit on the grass? Concrete is not cheap to install under the carport.

We take our unit out at least once a month, and sometimes twice a month. I live in FL, so no issues with freezing, etc...

Please chime in. I would like to know if any reason not to park it in the grass/sand.

I don't think you'll have a problem, but I would at least put something under the wheels...blocks/gravel...something. Just to have a better base.

I store my 5'er at my home on the side yard grass. I've done this for nearly 10 years first with a travel trailer and now with my fifth. No problems at all assuming you do have a nice hard pack that won't turn into a mud hole when it rains compromising stability.

I've also heard it's easier on the tires during long term storage than on concrete. Don't really know how true that is however.

citgodan, I just returned from FL after spending 3 months on dirt/ sand. I'll never do that again. We had an ant problem we could not get rid of. Yes, Florida doesn't freeze but the result is nothing on the ground ever dies. Pets had a problem to. Structure wise, sinking may be your only problem. Regards

Depending on where you are over time the ground will compress and sink. I put RCA under my unit @$10.00 per yard and there are also various cement products you can install under the tires only to give you a firm base for under $20.00. Some of the better ideas are the lattice cement blocks that allow grass to grow through them. A 4ft length under your 2 axles would solve that issue of sinking.

When I've seen good vehicles parked for long time frames in grass its caused rust issues (and animals). The moisture from the grass (rain, dew) stays around a lot longer than gravel or another hard surface and keeps the humidity up under the chassis. More so as it evaporates and keeps it humid in the shade. I've seen a lot of money spent on replacing frozen brakes or rusted out parts.

I keep mine in the yard, and have a set of 2x6's on the ground where the wheels stop. 1) it lets me get the trailer back in the exact same spot every time and 2) I believe it helps keep my tires from sinking into the ground during rain. I plan to do gravel in the future, but other priorities come first. Just being able to park the camper here at the house is an added bonus.

I've seen this too.

I've seen vehicles and trailers parked on grass for even a short amount of time, and they sink pretty quickly. If I was to do it, I'd put some concrete pavers under the tires and the jacks, just to help spread out the load.

The only headache with parking on grass is the dead lawn in the middle and trying to cut close with the mower.

Soft ground means re-leveling from time to time.

Any chance you can remove the sod and lay a few yards of gravel in the carport?
