Pics of my Stupid moment

20-25 years ago, I laughed at my father in law, today he got his revenge. Who'll be next to forget to lock things down?

The Jayco escaped, the Ford not so much.

I guess it could always be worse. At least you weren't cruising down the road when it came loose.

Had it damaged the camper I'd be upset, but the truck is just an old beater - so I'm OK with this. NOW, had it been the replacement TV I've been searching for I'd be a singing a different song.

Hopefully not a lot of others looking on? I can always hear the giggling no matter how silent they think they are

So that others can learn: what exactly happened? Is there a best practice that we should all follow?

It added "character" to the truck! Glad no one was hurt.

Don't know ANYTHING about 5W - doesn't it lock automatically when the two couple?

On my rig that is what is suppose to happen. but you need to double check to make sure that it locked. Done the same thing as this chap but was lucky enough that it fell on the closed tailgate with no damage. Was pleasantly surprised how strong that Ford tailgate with the built in step is!!

My hitch, obviously, doesn't lock in automatically. Once hitched I still need to "lock" it in. Now for best practices, maybe use a checklist and not a (FAILED) memory. And if available, perhaps a safety coach to double check.

There were no witnesses, I was in a hurry and working alone. This happened in my yard and I needed to move up to the garage to air up 8 tires, all about 4-5 pounds low.

I was talking to a friend who owns a body shop and he commented on how many tailgates and beds he's had to repair. So, yes it is a very common OOPS!

Don't feel bad, I have done it twice. My body shop man said it is the most common body repair on HD trucks.

Since I bought a Blue OX bed saver, I fell better and have not had any more incidents.

The key is to develop a procedure and do not deviate from it when hooking and un hooking.

Check check and check again and don't talk to anyone while hooking or unhooking and if any one is around watching tell them to bugger off.

Not one of my enjoyable days! We were leaving on a month long trip and this was the morning after the first stop. I had to look at it in the rear view mirror for a month.
