Pin box

When we hitch our Pinnacle to the Ram there is very little space between the open tailgate and the front of the 5th wheel camper. With our last 5th wheel there was enough room to walk between the open tailgate and the 5th wheel. Is this something I should be concerned about, if so what is the fix?

The truck is a Ram 3500 SRW, SB with a pullrite slider mounted to the factory 5th wheel system.

No fix, just don't forget to close the tailgate. Also you can't be off angle too much when hitching. I watch my tailgate when hitching up. My Eagle has a little more room than my Wildcat did. But my Sprinter I could walk through with the tailgate down. Just how they design the trailers. Probably to provide more basement space.

Most short beds are like that. You just have to be careful to back in at a straight angle. I have the long bed and I have enough room to walk around behind it. The V tail gate helps and an extended hitch pin also gives you more room.

All 3 of the trucks I had were long bed and made no difference. Each trailer I owned had different spacing. The 98 Keystone Sprinter had the most but had hardly any basement. That one I could walk between. The other two it's only a few inches.

I considered an extended pin box, just not sure how that would effect the weight or change the towing characteristics.

The space from the rear axle to the bumper is the same between LB/SB on an otherwise identical truck. It’s the trailer design that dictates it.
