Pinnacle wide body

Thinking of buy a 32 RLTS but have heard there are some states that have a max width of 8 feet. True or not

Here's a quote from a TripSavvy article.

"Alabama, Arizona, Washington D.C., Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, and Tennessee each have a width restriction for trailers of 8 feet.

In Connecticut width for RVs is limited to 7.5 feet, 8 feet high, length 24 feet and weight 7,300 pounds on the Merritt and Wilbur Parkways."

So the answer's yes, to your question. Hopefully you don't need to travel there.

So no one has a Pinnacle in these states. They are 8-1/2 feet wide

Since they don't have to stop in on tractor trailer road checks, maybe no one really cares enough to get a tape measure out, and look. I was just answering a question, and was just as surprised by what I found.

Edit: I just checked another source, and Arizona, California, Connecticut, Kentucky, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah are all 8', and there are other states that restrict on "certain roads".

Your answer is incorrect.

The problem is that in some states, at least a few back roads are simply not designed or capable of handling a unit wider than 8 ft. and as such, those states have laws on the books restricting the width.

With that being said, I highly doubt you would have any issues with law enforcement UNLESS you were in say an accident where the wider width could be proven to be "at fault" or otherwise contributed to the accident or issue at hand or an officer was somehow looking for a way to write you up.

Here is something I found that may help explain why RV manufacturers build and sell wide body RV's in EVERY state, even though they are technically illegal to drive/tow in some.

According to that list I'm trapped in MA, VT and RI. The only other way to get out of here is through NH, CT or NY, all of which are listed. I haven't looked in NH, but I know for a fact that CT and NY sell Pinnacles.

We are into CT and NY several times a year and have never had an issue.

That’s 3” either side. I see these trailers and the big A’s all over the US. I wouldn’t sweat it.

Height would be more of a worry for me in the Northeast. But, plan accordingly and sure you’re fine there too.

If it was a big problem, dealers in those so called restrictive states couldn't sell 8.5' rigs. I'm in Louisiana now and all the dealers have huge inventory of 8.5' rvs. Billcf7, don't even give it a thought. A Pinnacle is an excellent choice. That extra 6" makes a huge difference.

I know in Kentucky some secondary roads limit the width to 96", even then there is a grace limit if you need to get to a main road for 102" width. 102" width is perfectly legal on the main highways.

I'm sure no one's going to give you a ticket for it, unless you're on a Parkway in NY. This is the New York State Police FAQ page. Read the section about 5 sections down.https://troopers.ny.gov/FAQs/Traffic...cial_Vehicles/

I'm guessing every state has a similar website to get info on.

I have a Pinnacle. I live in NY. I bought it in NY. I drive THROUGH NYC (Bridges, etc) to get out of NY. Rig is 102" wide and 13'6" tall hooked up. Never an issue. I've passed plenty of police. Commercial vehicles are not allowed on Parkways due to bridge height. I like the top of my rig so I don't go on parkways. Back roads - No problems so far except a tree branch getting a little too comfy with my antenna - That was in Delaware at a campground. Other than that - Zero issues.

Don't let width worry you. Height can be an issue if you like really tight campgrounds. Most can tell you if your rig is going to be too big. I avoid those. Sometimes I need to take a slightly different route due to height. For example: I don't go over the George Washington Bridge. They have a 13'6" hight limit and I've seen marks on the roof there from tractor trailers bouncing. I use 87 and go around. Never had an issue getting to where I want to go. Get the Pinnacle. You won't be disappointed. mine has been fantastic.

This is from the michigan.gov website:
Vehicle Width —*Section 717 of the Michigan Vehicle Code states that, "The total outside width of a vehicle or the load on a vehicle shall not exceed 96 inches, except as otherwise provided in this section."* Section 717 provides a number of exceptions to the 96-inch standard, including for vehicles hauling concrete pipe, agricultural products, logs, pulpwood, or wood bolts.* In addition, Subsection 717(5) sets a vehicle width limit for buses, trailer coaches, truck campers, and motor homes of 102 inches.* Senate Bill 736 would amend this subsection to also permit trailers and semitrailers up to 102 inches.

Makes a lot of sense. Travel trailers and 5th wheels can be 102, but utility trailers, snowmobile trailers and such can't?? I dont get it, but that michigan for ya.

We spent 6 months in Darien, GA at an RV park managed by a nice young couple. The husband was a local cop. I've seen him with a gun but never a tape measure.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lots of wide body 5th wheels and class A’s out there with many sold in the states thought to have 96” restrictions. Unless you plan on traveling rustic backroads, no problem. If you are planning on exploring rustic backroads, you’d be doing so in style.

Many states have laws on the books that are pretty much ignored, but they're still there if a member of a police agency wants to utilize them. There are always 'bigger fish to fry' for cops, so an over width vehicle is not a priority. It may become an add on ticket, if you're stopped for another reason, like maybe speeding, and they are up on their V&T, and you are giving him/her a hard time. Then they may start looking a lot closer. Perhaps a LEO member here will give some thoughts, just for giggles.
