Potential Roof Issue - 2016 Jayco Pinnacle

Wanted to create a thread to capture feedback of other 2016 Jayco pinnacles with possible roof issue or perhaps ours is just an isolated case. We love our 2016 Jayco Pinnacle 36 FBTS, but noticed a roof concern two weeks ago after taking our rig out of 3 months of storage.

When hosing off the roof, I noticed what appears to be possible de-lamination of aluminum or lifting of sharp edging underneath the roof layer near the edge (See attached Pictures). It appears this lifting/sharp edges has great potential to cut through the rubber roof material. You can already see the rubber stressed...

We purchased in Oct 2015 and our inaugural tour was about 5280 miles through IN, WI, SD, WY, MT, ID, WA, OR, ID, NV and AZ. We then stored our rig in covered storage for 3 months and just pulled it out for another trip. Our rig is only about 4-5 month old and in the elements for about 6weeks i.e. during the 5280 miles.

We took pictures (attached), the dealer fwd pics to factory and they immediately replied and will take care of the concern! Since it's not a safety issue the dealer called and left it up to us when to bring in the rig for the repairs... Estimate a week to 10 day repair based on if they can just peel back the corners, re-glue and staple without splintering any of the underlayment the repairs...otherwise the repair will be more extensive. According to the dealer explanation, if the underlayment splinters, they cannot re-lay the rubber due to inconsistency in the surface...

As stated, we could not be happier with our Jayco TO INCLUDE the factory response and provided details by our local dealer.

Again our post is to capture if our issue is isolated or perhaps a design change defect etc.... we do have a lot of road miles/vibrations etc on our rig, but it's still only 5 months old. We are currently on another month long trip, 1620 miles so far and thoroughly enjoying our Jayco -

I can always keep a close eye on my roof, as I can see it clearly from a second floor window in my house.
Like I said in the other thread this post was in, and I'll note it here for others to read, my staples are much closer together.

What was the approximate build date of yours AZ?

This makes me wonder if Jayco changed to this roof edge design / practice on more than just the 2016 Pinnacles. How about the Eagle HT, Eagle, Northpoint, or for that matter all of the 5er and TT lines.

Hi Klassic,

Original PO delivery date was Sept 21, 2015, but slipped to October 16th. Estimated build was the first to second week of Oct 2015. We took a factory tour on the 15th and delivery on the 16th.

Hi dalebra,

This could be a simple isolated incident where the person (stapler) on the line went too quickly and put too much space between the staples .... It doesn't appear the staples are coming out, it's as if the glue between the staple spacing is not holding... I can press on the raised parts and hear the squishing of the glue.... If the staples were closer, I don't believe this would be an issue...

Again, I'm confident Jayco will make it right... Truly happy with the response up to this point ...

In another thread I reported failure of my EPDM roof membrane after 5 1/2 years in service. The membrane was failing where the a/c's dripped on it and moisture was leaking through the membrane. My solution wasn't cheap, but no more rubber roof, no more caulking, no more worrying about parking under a tree and a small limb falling and poking a hole in it, etc. My solution was RV Flex Armor and since I full time it was well worth it for me. Side benefit, the roof is much thicker than the rubber and when it is raining I can hear TV. There is absolutely nothing to caulk on my roof now an I also solved the crank up TV antenna problem also. It was leaking through the antenna on occasion and since I never used it anyway - now gone with another type that may not work as well, but I don't care.

Jayco has gone through some roof redesigns over the few years that I have been an owner. On my 2011 they went side to side with EPDM like your photos. On my 2014 and prior they stopped about 3" short of the sides and then went to an aluminum brown wrap. This gave the new color schemes that brown look roof without doing the whole roof in brown since my main roof is white. What I do not like is having 2 huge seams running down my entire trailer on top of the roof.

What your looks like is that they still have the aluminum wrap around the edges and it's applied to the roof with Dicor under the EPDM. Settling and expanding in the hot sun had most likely made it settle and contour to the roof. That's at least what it appears like from the photos.

I thought maybe they had a production meeting on the floor after looking at how the new rolled edge was being installed. Mine was built in near the end of July, so that blows that theory.

We have the TPO roof material. Next weekend even if my unit is still not ready I am going to the dealer to look at all my repairs and will look at my roof. If I have a problem it can stay at the dealer since they have possession of it longer thanI have. Me seven weeks, them nine. To bad they r not making the payments

Wow Rock,

Isn't possession 9/10 of law, make em' make a payment or three... ha

We are sitting in North Bend/Coos Bay OR in pouring rain w/ occasional hail, just over 1300 miles now on this trip... Once it stops raining, I am going to take some more pixs to see if the roof is getting any worse....

It sure would be nice to have a quieter roof like the RV Flex Armour, the TV is pretty loud considering the heavy rain, but I'm not sure I'd swing for the expense considering our unit was expensive enough and it's only 5 months old....

I'll send updated pics if the roof appears to be getting worse....

There is a Coast Guard Air Station there. Never made it to the west coast while active but been to Astoria. How do ur slide awnings do in the wind or do u bring in the slides when bad. I guess that is the one down side to slide awnings in high wind. Hopefully u got no damage with hail on FW or truck

Hi Rock,

Slide awning have done really well in winds, only once have we pulled the slides in when the winds were exceeding 45-50mph last trip...

Does not appear the Truck or RV suffered any hail damage... The hail was only slightly larger than bb size, but it did come down pretty heavy for awhile...

Thanks for asking and I truly hope your rig get repaired and back to you soon!

Hey Rock, I have been retired about 10 years now. Still buying and paying off toys, just don't work any more. Served in Vietnam 1966-1967. Marine Corps provided me a scenic fun filled cruise complete with typhoon to beautiful Southeast Asia. That was the last cruise I ever took!

AZ, we had that same exact issue repaired on our last fifth wheel. Aluminum molding not secured very well and protruding. Less than a day repair. There should not be much if any glue on the wrap around molding. In most cases, they can remove the edge trim, roll back the roofing a little and redo what is necessary. You aren't the first nor the last with this issue.

I prefer Ed's more permanent fix, but if that's not in the budget, yours can be easily fixed.

It's stapled luan (it feels like luan to me) that makes radius, the luan edge is buckled between his far spaced staples. There is no molding under the membrane.
Once that luan is buckled I can't see them getting it flat again without replacing it.

Are we referring to the same aluminum radius molding at the edge? That is in fact aluminum stapled to the roof plywood then the sidewall. TPO roof is then wrapped over that and secured with side molding. Take one apart and you'll see. Almost every manf. uses the same concept.

I thought it was aluminum until I felt it, but maybe it is. It just felt like wood because the edge feels to be about 1/16" thick and when I press on it and tap on it it feels like wood.
It makes sense that it would be aluminum though.
