Power Surgers in 2013 Pinnacle 36 REQS
Greetings. For a while, we have been experiencing power surges, with lights brightening and then dimming, in our 2013 Pinnacle 5th wheel (36 REQS). Does this unit come with a built-in surge protector, or should we purchase one to use between our hook-up and the camp's power source? Thanks for any advice! THE MOTTS, currently coming to you from Tucson, Arizona.

If your are talking about the 12 volt lights, that sounds like a bad converter or even a bad battery. It might also be a loose battery terminal causing the problem.

Agree with Grumpy. If you are talking about the 12v lights dimming momentarily , it is connections or an indication of a potential problem in the converter. If it is a new rig I would have it checked by a dealer. You could put a DC volt meter on the 12 volt and monitor the voltage. See if you can make it happen by turning on lights etc., Check connections.
A surge protector is a good idea but you won't see it in the DC lights.

We have a 2011 Pinnacle. It uses a Progressive Dynamics converter, which is programmed to go into an "equalizing" mode about every 24 hours. The output voltage is increased to 14.4 volts for 20 minutes or so, then it returns to the float mode voltage of 13.2. You will notice the lights brighten for a while, then dim. This is normal operation, and is done to equalize the battery cells.

X2 on the surge protector. I think huronwoods is spot on with his response, but the surge protectors are worth every penny IMO.

After reading post#4 by huronwoods, I am reminded that we see the same dimming from time to time when camping and I agree that it is the PD charge wizard going thru its paces.
I would not be concerned about it unless it is happening all the time.
