I got the 235/85 16". The S637's. I don't recall what the load range was, but the are definitely a major step up from the Rainiers.

What were the stock rims rated at?
Why has no one else replaced the rims.

Thanks for posting this. I figured the rims weren't rated for 110psi. I looked at my rims but couldn't find a stamp for that. I had some older rims that had it stamped inside the rims where the tires had to be removed. I had two class A's where I went up on tire ratings to G and the Goodyear shop (4th Gen.) here recommended staying with the original rims running the lower pressure. Never had another tire problem with those. They said a 110psi would make it ride more like a lumber wagon. I wonder if that holds true for the 5th wheel. I don't need any more pounding on the unit than I already have.

My rims were rated for 110 psi so I was lucky. I replaced the OEM tires with Good Year G614's. Fantastic tire.

I agree, I had 8 of those on a pace arrow with a tandem axle. Only 16" I could keep on the unit. Never a problem. That's what I'll probably go with for sure.

This is what I was wondering about with the pressure. Wouldn't 80 or 90 lbs still be good so you don't have a "lumber wagon".
Tom, maybe that's why you're thinking about shocks. I don't find my ride all that harsh on the stock tires, but I'm not quite as long or heavy.
I want to swap out these tires becuase I DONT want a blow out.
I already waited 5 months for dealer repairs. I can't imagine how long I would be out for if a blowout did a bunch of body damage.
I'm calling the Sailuns cheap insurance

Klassic

As I've told many people, do yourself a favor and get the Sailun tires. They are some serious heavy duty tires. I ordered mine online from simpletire.com. The tire alone weighs more than the stock tire and rim combined. I took the tires to my local tire shop and had them mounted and balanced (with my TPMS). They require metal valve stems. I sold my old rainier tires on CL for $200 to a landscaper. The rainier tires were very thin and flimsy. Looked like something off a kids bike. Seriously, if you get to look at and touch the tire when it's off the rim, you can't help but wonder how it ever could withstand any load or force from a big fifth wheel.

As for tire pressure, I run mine at 110 to get the full load capacity. I did not need new rims. Yes, I could run them at a lower pressure to get a little softer ride but I'm not sure how much softer it would be given how thick the sidewalls of the Sailuns are. I have not taken my trailer to the scales, but my yellow sticker says it shipped out at 13,600 pounds. I've probably added 600-800 pounds of stuff. Because of the weight, I keep them aired up at full pressure.

Everyone has there own preferences. Personally, I'll be running based on capacity ratings. From what I see on a G614 @ 110psi is 3750. So using the load chart you can adjust accordingly. If my rims are indeed rated at 80psi, they will definitely need to be upgraded to meet capacity as 80psi will only rate at 3042. As for shocks, probably less chance of breaking springs but I just see more force being transferred else where. Same with over rated leafs. From what I've seen with my unit so far, I can't imagine what the end result would be by trying to beef things up.

You beat me to the punch! I was just about to write the same thing. If I were to decrease my pressure to 100psi, I would have a capacity of 3550 per tire, giving me a total of 14,200 pounds....which is about what my rig weighs base on my guesstimate. Therefore, I keep them at 110.

BTW, do you have a picture of your rims? I could only assume they would be the same as mine (which are rated for 110)

Red face

Sorry Tom, dropped unit off in April for warranty. Not expecting it back till Nov. 2017 They had it last year for 6 months also. So I haven't had the pleasure of having it in my possession long enough to do much with it. It's a 1%'r.

Not my unit, but these are the rims I have.

It sure does appear Rainers like Towmax have a lot of blowouts on the heavier 5th wheels. I was sure angry when I had 2 blowouts after 1200 miles on my Towmax tires. They occurred 8 miles apart on both sides. About 5K in damages. Jayco says they put on tires approved for the use, DOT seems to just except and the manufactures claims and the manufacture stalls around and makes you jump through enough hoops you finally give up. If anyone should file a suit against the tire manufacture it should be the insurance companies.

No blowouts or bulges, but I had 2 Rainers wearing unevenly. I replaced all 4 with the new GY Endurance. Too soon for a full review, but I watch my tires closely in the mirrors and the new GYs flex a LOT less then the Rainers as we're tooling down the road.

Those are the rims I have. This isn't going to work if I have to get new rims too.
Let's see your rims Tom.
