Rear right tire wear on 5th wheel toyhauler

I have a new 2016 Jayco 355W Toyhauler purchased this spring. I have put approximately 5000 miles on it this summer. I am getting premature tire wear (on the outer edge only) on the rear right tire. I always keep correct tire pressure (cold 80 psi) on all the tires. I have a TireMinder system which allows me to monitor the pressure and temperature on all 4 tires of the 5th wheel. It has never been overloaded. I have had it across the weight scales a few times. Is there anyone else having this issue?? My thought is that most highways are not exactly flat, they slope down on the right side. Thus the rear right tire is taking most of the weight distribution. I have the hitch on the truck as low as it can go without interference, in order to run the toyhauler as level as possible. Any ideas??

Are you running the factory tires? There's a lot of chatter about the cheap tires installed by Jayco on the forums here. Sounds like many a RV have had tires blow out prematurely!

Thanks for your input, yes it still has the (made in China) tires that came with the unit.

Put a straight edge across all four sidewalls of the tires somewhere close to the center of the axles and see if your rear tire isn't toed in. All four sidewalls should Touch the straight edge or be darn close. My guess is that you will see a gap between the straight edge and the side wall off the rear tire at the front. Trailer should be pulled as straight as you can pull it for 50-100ft before checking to ensure you don't have any side load on the axles or springs from backing or turning.

It is very easy to fashion a quick check tool for tow in or out. Long piece of string and a small hook made from old coat hanger. Attach hook to one end and hook to axle or chassis in front of forward wheel. Now pull string tight until it touches forward tire on both sidewalls near axle center. String should also touch both sidewalls of rearward tire if tow is correct. Will NOT check camber angle but simple and cost effective. Hope this helps.

When the factory tires on our North Point failed after 4000 miles, I replaced them with load range F and keep 95 lbs. of pressure. So far, so good.

Do you have Westlake tires on your seismic wave? If so your right rear might look like this......
it wore on the outside, had alignment checked at a truck shop. Alignment ok.
I have about 7-8K on it when this happened. Since then I have gone another 4 K and have had to replace another one. I wore itself bald all the way across on the left side rear.
Jayco and Westlake wouldn't do anything for me........................Replacing with Sailun 14 plys, huge difference in quality.

You got Westlakes? bet you do. this the right rear on a Seismic, about 7-8K on it. Warranty? tried and no go with Jayco or Westlake.

it still amazes me that the rv manufacturers are still useing these tires. Absolutely amazing as you said they won't stand behind them. And the damage caused by a blow out can be very significant including loss of control of your rig. Makes you wonder how many other corners the manufacturers are cutting in the name of increasing profits. It's not like we're not paying a lot of money for these rvs. There expensive. Putting these tires on a quality rv is like building a new home and leaving the tarpaper on as the permanent roof. Failure is imminent as well as substatial damages. Jmo

Have an alignment performed. They don't align them after they are built and the majority need it.
I had mine done about 3 weeks ago.

Had alignment, no issue just POS tires! Replacing with Sailun G637

Loboclone, yes I do have the wonderful cheap Westlakes and the rear right is starting to look just like the one in your photo. It is simple, Jayco applies cheap POS tires on their equipment.

I had the same problem with the right front tire on my dual axle toy hauler (was not a Jayco). Turns out, either the front axle or the rear is dragging the tire sideways significantly when turning. The sharper the turn, the greater the scrubbing. The tire with the lightest load of the four wheels is the one gets the most wear. I never solved the problem. Just minimized the number of sharp hard turns, and used better quality tires.

Minimizing your tight turns definitely helps reduce rear axle tire wear especially when it is hot outside. However in my experience these cheaper tires which I have had on brand new trailers for years just flat don't hold up. I have had cheap tires on brand new trailers that wear out extremly quick and wear real funky. I have replaced them with the Carlisle tires that our tire shop likes and in the same driving conditions the Carlisles aren't really showing any wear when the west lakes or equivalent are ready to pop. I'm not saying that Carlisles are the best tires but it sure would be nice if the manufacturers spent another $30.00 per tire to install these from the factory. It would make for a much better product and a heck of a lot safer trailer going down the road.
