Replace slooooowww factory landing gear

Since Reese shot down my Goosebox idea....

The next item on my list is replacing the Jayco factory 2018 Eagle HT landing gear, with something faster. That would literally be anything. I think the Dilbert math on the factory landing gear is 1 inch per 9 minutes

I want to replace them with the Reese Bulldog 9 inch per minute dual motor units.

https://www.reeseprod.com/Product/50...v-landing-gear

The only thing I don't like immediately, is the 2 button switch. The previous version offered a 3 button switch panel. That version not only had a right and left, but had a center button for both. Having an Andersen Ultimate, I have to raise and lower more than a traditional kingpin hitch. I may look for an alternate panel with a 3rd button.

Of those who have replaced their landing gear, were the tabs in the correct location on your Eagle?

This appears to be a fairly simple replacement. I plan to replace them while the trailer is on the truck/hitch. I assume that is a safe method?

That would eliminate the ability to auto level, right?

An auto-level system would be way better of an upgrade. We had ours replaced by Equalizer System and made RV use so much easier

has it always been slow? or has it gotten slower over time?
Before I would put down a bunch of money for a new system I would do as someone else stated, check it out to make sure the new one actually is faster...

If it's 2 beer landing gear.. that might be a good thing...

A little coat prohibitive. Roughly 3-4 times the cost.

Ours is slow also, especially with an Andersen hitch which has to go higher than most others. But I just deal with it, I'm retired anyway so no big hurry.

For the record, the factory lippert operates at under 3" per minute. So the Reese would be three times as fast.

I'm speaking without knowledge but, I don't think it would effect auto level. I say that because the auto level works from sensors that are looking for the level front to back and left to right the jacks are independently operated to achieve level. The only problem might be the faster speed of the "Bulldogs" could make it hard for the system to control them accurately. Just my theory less real knowledge. Like another post mentioned I'm retired so 2-3 minutes to raise the front landing gear is acceptable. Also like another post said spend your money on auto level, worth every penny, I love mine and can't imagine going back to the old way. Happy camping all and God Bless.

Our landing gear pretty much quit doing its job. We were gonna fix it ourselves. Until we began to disassemble and found the legs are welded to the frame, even the carriage bolt clamps. Anybody else try to work on landing gear and find this?

I haven't looked that close, yet. If it warms up a bit, I'll get over there and take a closer look.

Eliminate other reasons first before swapping in parts.

What I am referring to is the battery and wiring. Jacks of any sort are going to require a lot of power. 10ga or better wiring up to the motor pigtails. Got one of those silly shrouded mini-fuse holders in line with the cable? Cut that sob out and put in a manual reset circuit breaker. Wire nuts on the splices? These are not too bad, but replace anyway to make sure you are using a wire nut for the number and gauge of wires.

Using a remote up\down toggle switch? Ratjer than run a bunch of current across mickey-mouse switch contacts, have the switch drive relays instead. Google for motor reversing using relays. Basically have 2 automotive relays wires so that the normally closes connection is grounded on both. Turning on 1 relay connects battery + to one side of motor, other relay connects to other side of motor. Turning on both relays puts battery + on both sides, you wont blow a fuse accidentally unless miswired. For simplicity, you can also use a sail or windlass contactor. Common on bi-directional hudraulic pumps.

To put it into perspective, i am sure my old Eagle 5er worked great for a short time when new. 3 years later, not working so great. Using a multimeter. I found around 4 volts was being to motor due to resistance in fuse holder and switch contacts. Mostly fuse holder. Corrected as above, and 5er became fast to get on/off pickup.

I forgot E-Trailer has a kit to convert existing single motor to a dual motor front landing gear.

Did you try greasing the factory landing gear. It has fitting. Mine was extremely dry. Worked much better after grease.
