Roof Issue

Hi All:

Been some time I have not posted, My last post was my 15 Pinnacle FLSA was going back to Jayco for a second time due to another CRACK under the driver side slide. When it was at Jayco I had asked them to check my roof that there were staples coming out.(Unit was there second time Nov. 2017 to Jan. 2018) They said $7500.00 to fix it and bring it back up in August 2018. I though there was a 5 year warranty on the Roof. It has gotten worse since my last trip. Check out this pictures and video that to me it seems whatever they use on the curved part of the roof joint is coming loose and popping the staples out which will eventually come thru the rubber roof. I wonder if it was from the removal of the slides when the fixed the cracks on both sides? Any help is appreciated to see how I need to proceed. My unit is now 3 years 7 Months.

Also I posted this below in RED on another Jayco Pinnacle FLSA web site of some issues since I got the unit back (Lost 2 of the New Marathon Tires), will see if it lets me post all the pictures and video:
Video is to big I will try and make a smaller one tomorrow its already dark....

Hi RV'ers. Just wanted to pass some information along on my 2015 FLSA. I now have my unit 3 Years and 7 Months. I have had a lot of issues with this Jayco. I am not an expert but I think I know somethings since I have been Rving from 1982 to present and this is my 5 unit having had in the past 2 class C, 1 gas A and 1 Pusher, but this unit by far has had the most problems. Here is just some issues since my last trip to Talladega Speedway and general maintenance. When my unit went back to Jayco for warranty work it had the stock Power King Tires, 3 blew out on the driver, Jayco put 4 new Good Year Marathon on with a build date of 1-16 (My unit was there June-July 16). I have put approx. 5000 miles on them most of my camping is here in Florida, air pressure always checked even at rest stops, tires covered when not in use and parked on concrete pad when Home. My last 2 trips out I lost 2 tires. (Some wheel well damage which I fixed and waiting for camping world road side is a joke changed tires myself) I had the unit weighed came in at 14,950 with 1/4 tank of water. Just put on 4 new good year endurance so far no issues. Also I noticed more stapes on the roof popping out more since last check, and now loose wood in the front roof line. Seems the corner wrap a round is loose under the Rubber Roof. Check yours out that staples will pop thru and you will get water leaks. Also I have had good luck with 2-6 Volt batteries to make 12 V. I get great amp hours with the Fridge when dry camping. Even Thou I have had a lot of problems I still enjoy this Unit/floor plan.
Safe Travels.

Have a good Night.

I was wondering if roof pieces came loose when they removed both slides to fix the cracks. My unit went back 2 times to Jayco for the stress cracks under the slides. Who knows when they removed the slides what was done.

Maybe if those idiots removed the slides without the camper jacks being down and level.Wow that looks awful, never seen that before!

Hopefully Jayco will replace the roof for free. If not, I would take the coach to Green Cove Springs and RVRoof.com. Have Dave Adair spray the roof. I'm sure it will be less than $7500.00. I had them do my Motorhome several years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. Saved maintenance time and was much quieter and cooler/warmer. We have since traded for a Jayco Designer 5th wheel. When the warranty runs out I will have the roof sprayed.

Thanks for the Reply's, I have looked into the spray on roofs. About $5000 to $6000 for my unit. Camping World wants $10,000.00 for new rubber membrane, Jayco waiting to see what they say for Warranty, but $7500 plus I have to drive back and fourth from FL to Indiana if not covered. Sucks for a 3 1/2 year old roof which I take care of (always clean, condition, and reseal)

I still cant get this video uploaded not sure what the problem is, wanted to show how loose the pcs are the rubber membrane is fine. But before I do anything if it is not covered by warranty is I am worried about the loose wood underneath. If I do the spray roof I still have loose pcs or does the spray on weight it down or, I would guess they need to cut open and fix it first.

If they replaced the sides, the roof was almost off the unit anyway. the roof trusses sit on top of the side walls and are screwed down int the top plate/aluminum frame.

It sounds like we've had similar issues with our 2015 Pinnacles. My unit also developed the fiberglass cracks on the driver's side below the bedroom slide. After some effort, Jayco paid for the $7.5k repair job by a private body shop in Houston. The techs pulled the slide out, partially detached the front cap and welded additional aluminum framework before putting it all back together. I was especially disturbed to note that the official instruction sheets from Jayco to the shop for that repair were dated in 2008 - 7 years before my unit was built! Jayco is clearly aware of the weakness in their structural design. So far, I've been happy with the repairs.

About a year later, just before my warranty was to expire, I discovered the same roof staple detachment issue you're experiencing. My issues appeared on the drivers side about midway down the roof. (Basically where the roof begins to slope towards the rear end). Jayco originally wanted me to "...wait until it punctures through the roof membrane." but when I escalated and asked for any credible scenario where this problem is going to self-repair or magically go away, they agreed to fix it. There was another $7k repair job. After the old membrane was removed, it was quite obviously just a sloppy, careless original installation of the shield the lays over the roof edge to the fiberglass wall. I'll predict the same guy was running the staple gun on the day your roof was attached.

Both of these issues are clearly structural failures in the design and manufacturing process. And very expensive to fix. Keep at it with Jayco. Trust me, you're not the first guy from whom they've heard this complaint.

Good luck!

@GretasDad....Thanks for the info. I will keep trying to stay positive and pushing Jayco to correct this. The part that stinks is if I was not so upside down on my loan I would get rid of the P.O.S$$$......Love the floorplan but just to many issues with this unit.......I know not all Jayco's fault it's some of the parts they use also, but just in general they put these units together so fast now a days seems the quality has gone down a lot from past unit's I have owned. When I went to the Dealer they wanted to give me $30,000 for a trade in.

Some of my Issues:
Kitchen Slide out problem/failure
Leveling system Problem/failure
ceiling molding's fell off in living room

Broken Bathroom sink Pipe
Loose pipes under kitchen sink

Kitchen Grey Tank Fell out
Cracks under the left and right front Slides
5 tire blow outs. (Unit never overloaded even with full water tanks when going dry camping)

2 AC Fans Blades broken Off due to broken fan motor mounts and then Main AC unit Failed/Replaced
Latest Issue roof (Wood Loose under rubber membrane)
and another dozen stupid stuff that should never happen.

I know some of our roads don't help either Alabama and Mississippi have some ruff roads and tear up these units.....

Sorry just letting off some steam.....

Safe Travels.

I had my roof sprayed with RV Flex Armor a couple of years ago an absolutely love it. Zero caulking to leak as well.

I would have a brand new rubber roof sprayed before ever using the rig. Rubber roof's warranty is a joke as is the product. My rubber membrane was failing after 5 years service and the roof manufacturer offered $225.00 total compensation under their 12 year warranty. A joke!

Read my posts here from early 2016.

Good Morning:

I got a reply email from Jayco regarding the roof, and as always trying to get out of it and say it has nothing to due with prior work and its not covered. So now the battle begins. So sad how these company's get away with building such poor products. I really thought Jayco made better quality 5th wheel. This really is the worst RV I have ever owned, my prior 2 class C were Winnebago Mini Winnie C class both never went back for anything, then I got a Georgieboy Cruise Master which has some issues but nothing like this 5th wheel, then I upgraded to a Winnebago Tour in 2010 Diesel Pusher had some minor issues before going to a 5th wheel since our plans changed and we decided to leave the rv in a location for long periods of time and thought would be less hassle without and engine and transmission to worry about. Sorry for rambling just getting so tired with all the problems, some days I feel its not worth it anymore to have a camper.

Regard,

ER

Boy your right on with that statement! Took us almost 2 years to get our roof replaced under warranty! Remember in the small print on warranty. You have 2 years and 6 months to file a claim against them!

Since your unit is over 3 1/2 years from purchase, it sounds like your argument on the roof needs to focus on the failure as structural. Probably best to read up on what items fall under that definition in the warranties.

Remember, the Jayco employee incentive is to reduce warranty claims so their first answer is almost always "no". Watch the movie "The Rainmaker" based on the Grissom novel. You're in that same situation as most people with insurance company claims.

I share your frustration with RV quality. Sometimes I think I'm in love with the idea of RV'ing but the available equipment just doesn't make the dream attainable. I'm reading a book on "Vagabonding" which promotes world travel with nothing but a backpack. Surely I can find a high quality backpack, huh?!? 🤔 No tire blowouts... no water leaks... no jack issues... I'm just sayin'.

Update

Good Morning:

Just an update about roof with the back and fourth with Jayco. Also I was wrong about the 5 year structural warranty. Does not apply to Fifth Wheels, it s only the 2 year limited warranty.

Last Email from Jayco:
Good Afternoon,
The 5 year limited warranty applies only to the camping trailer AKA the pop up or fold down trailers.
As far as the roof issue, after further review and speaking to management we will offer to cover the repair. You will need to contact a Jayco and let them know you have contacted us on this issue and get an appointment set up.

Its a start but now the hard part is getting into the dealer to see if its a patch job or a full roof replacement, sent my dealer all the details and pictures as service mgr requested. They are on a 2 month wait to get in, seems many dealers are 2 to 3 months back logged on getting in for warranty work. I had to go to Tampa and stopped at Lazy Days RV there where so many units all over the place for service and every service bay was full and they have like 100 bays!!

Will update as more info comes in.

Regards, and safe travels.

ER, that's great news from Jayco. It really feels nice to see them step up in a situation like this when they don't "technically" have to.

Yes, RV dealers around the country are backed up for weeks/months. Partially due to the volume of RV's being sold these days, partially because all those RV's have quality issues and partially due to a general shortage of RV techs. It's a tough situation when you need a major repair.

A suggestion for you: see if Jayco can recommend any "non-dealer" repair shop near you for this particular fix. When I needed the fiberglass crack fixed on my unit and expressed concerns with the nearby dealers having the time and expertise for the job, Jayco recommended a shop in Houston - NOT a Jayco dealer and they did a good job, quicker than any dealers could get to me. The downside was that I had to pay the shop myself and then Jayco reimbursed me but it was a pretty quick turnaround.

Just an idea...

This is from Jayco's website:
Quote:
Jayco provides to the original purchaser additional industry-leading five-year (5) parts and labor coverage on our camping trailer lifter system, roof, floor and frame. We also provide for camping trailers and expandable travel trailers five-year (5) coverage on our tent with parts, labor, and freight covered the first two years; parts, factory labor, and return freight during years three, four, and five.
Isn't the 5th wheel, tag and tent campers considered "camping trailer"?

Jayco leaves out the expensive ones. It took us almost 2 years for them to replace roof on our 16 Eagle RSTS. Good thing there were sections of roof where decking was cracked. Yet they still covered it up at the factory!

No, camping trailer is normally a tent top, travel trailer is a hard side fully self contained. Even JAYCO's web site differentiates when you look at their product.list
