roof maintenance and eternabond

So I have only used this awesome tape once for a little (minor) rub-up-against issue I had with a low hanging limb. to date, the tape has held up great where the roof meets the side, and I like it.

Has anyone used eternabond tape instead of using dicor or similar product for the length of your units where the sides meet the roof?

I hope not to start a war over this, just wanting some solid feedback as to why it's not a good idea. I get the fact when you put the tape down - it's permanent.

Here is the video I saw and thought why not?

On our rig the factory self leveling started cracking in less than a year on the roof.
I don't particular like heights and we live in cold country.
We bought a couple of rolls of eternabond
I bought some self leveling and tried level out around some of the low spots and let it cure a few days
Then I eternabonded everything on roof
Front cap, sewer vents, bathroom vent, skylight, solar prep connection, TV antenna, ladder mount, front and rear corners
That was in 2017.
Check it on occasion and it's sealed same as day I applied!
I'm a believer. If I need to replace anything up there it will be harder to do... but at least the roof is water tight
That self leveling stuff just is a soft messy limited time solution in my eyes

I think if you use the search bar at the top of the page in the gold bar you will find Eternabond is a pretty common topic with a number of threads about it's use.

Thanks RoadrunnerII, good to know that.

CAG - I am asking if anyone has done exactly what the video is showing for all of the seams. I know Eternabond is great for repairs, but want to know about this exact application.

I ran some across the seam that connects my front cap to the roof proper.

I Eternabond the entire roof perimeter and seal the tape edges with Eternabond sealant. Eternabond sealant is tough and far out lasts Dicor. It's one of the smartest things I have done to our RVs.

I did the front cap to roof and rear. And was glad I did as on the front I found a missing screw and a broken off one under the dicor I removed. On the rear I had three screws coming up, on through and 2 on the way.

While I was up there I removed the Dicor on all the roof items, antenna, skylight, vents, stink pipe. Now I will clean and inspect it but no more Dicor to fail.

As mentioned, lots of posts to search. I have seen some regarding sidewall coverage if you want to search. Pretty sure there were pictures with it.

Discussed in numerous threads on this site previously. About every type of application has been covered here including that one.

I promise you there is little to nothing that has not been covered here.

questions..

I am researching to redo my roof on my 2003 jayco, and saw this video. My dicor was redone about 2 years ago, but it's constant watching and tweaking. Do you remove the self level dicor before using eternabond tape? I see in the video the guy taped over a cable. I was going to order Heng's, but read it will flake off, given it's acrylic based.

Any answers are read and appreciated, thx, Della.

I have not put the tape over Dicor, only the roof membrane. Once I discovered Eternabond sealant/caulk, I do not use Dicor around the vents, skylight, t.v. antenna, etc. I use the Eternabond white sealant/caulk. I put it right over the Dicor. It is much more durable than Dicor.

I put the Eternabond tape around the roof perimeter and then use the Eternabond sealant/caulk on the tape edges to totally seal it up.

Two products: Eternabond Tape, Eternabond Sealant
I also use the Eternabond prep products. One is a cleaner, and the other is a surface prep aerosol, a very light tacky spray. It adheres super-well, and my hard work stays beautiful!

I put eternabond tape over the dicor...but our trailer was less than a year old. I believe you can put it over older dicor but you need to clean it well and use eternabond cleaner. It's best to lay the tape so it grabs the roof material on front facing edges. I have used it to hold down a cable on the roof as well.

Thanks all for your replies. I just didn't want to find a video like this one, do it and find out there are 14 reasons why you shouldn't do it

Thanks for the links CAG.

One thing to be aware of...

When I used Eterna-clean on my roof I accidentally over-sprayed some of it on one of my skylights. I found within just a day or two that the skylight dome became brittle and actually cracked when touched. It was not like that before I used the Eterna-clean. Needless to say I had to replace the skylight.
Now, I am not 100% sure the Eterna-clean was the cause, but it is highly suspect. One of the primary ingredients in Eterna-clean is acetone, which is known to attach some plastics. So if you plan to use it, I would avoid getting any on the top of the skylights.

Didn't watch the video, but I have placed 2" eternabond all along the sides and back of the trailer roof. It extends up from the eve trough and part way onto the roof. Initially I had to patch a couple slits caused by 2.5" hail in the roof along that edge. I kind of liked it; it gives a nice protection for the next tree limb, ladder, whatever. Eternabond requires some finesse so I used 24" strips starting in the back so the leading edge of the overlap would be facing the back, not the front. For the back roof edge I started at the sides and went up, like roof shingles. I washed the roof well and slightly softened the roof fabric with light acetone rub for prep.

Did it to mine last season. Looks factory installed if you take your time.
