RV Garage

Looking some opinions on door height. We are considering an enclosed, insulated garage. Currently I am pricing a 14x14 roll up door. We will also have a ramp that goes in to the garage. We are thinking an 8’ pad with a rise of 3”.

Is 14’ high enough?
Will the top of camper hit door opening due to the ramp when backing in?

Thanks for any feedback

JSK, you are close but why take the risk? Add a foot and eliminate the risk all around. Who is the say this is the only RV you will ever park there? 13'6" is where you probably are but then again, that is a guess. SKIDAWG

A big consideration is also if you use a garage door opener or run it manually. Even perfectly balanced springs will not hold a door open as far as you can by adjusting a door operator. The only exception is a roll-up door which will be opened and closed with a chain hoist and you can control the height and lock it in place. I’m not a big fan of roll-up doors. They have their place in industrial settings or clearance challenged applications but you’ll never get the same smooth operation and never close to the same insulation value you can get from a sectional door. Sectional doors are way easier to repair if damage occurs to the door itself or springs need replaced. Rollers and hinges are easy to replace and parts are readily available on sectional doors as opposed to roll-up door parts which aren’t universal across brands. As an installer since 92’ I can tell you sectional doors are much less of a PIA when things go wrong.

Most fifth wheels are tapered down at the back but why have to pucker every time you back in?

Give it an extra foot and don't forget to check the door specs.

You can never have too much room. I was told that and still learned the hard way. Built my 40x30 pole barn with 12' walls because "I was never going to get a camper" since I had a cabin up north. Well, only 2 years later, I have a camper that doesn't fit and sold the cabin. Go big!

The company we are looking at only offers a roll up door and 14x14 is their largest size. Camper at highest point is 13’5” by my best measuring. The ramp is not a must but if i can make the whole thing higher off the ground I want to(living in eastern NC ). It may mean the ramp has to extend farther out in front of the entrance. If I keep everything the same elevation then not a problem. Thanks for the reply

Why would you have to pucker each time you back it in? The building and door height isn't going to freakishly change, if it fit the first time it will fit every time regardless if the clearance is 6 inches or 2 feet!
