Safety break-away switch

I noticed that the safety break away switch on my 28.5 5er has quit working. Anyone know if the 12v for the switch is from the house batteries or is there a separate 12v battery? If so, know where the portable battery is located at.

Thanks,

Should be from the house battery. I don't think these switches are very robust and the contacts may have corroded. Using a VOM, I would verify you are getting 12V to the switch then check for 12V from the switch to brakes. If this part of the circuit is good then follow the wire to the brakes looking for a short or break in the wire checking for 12V any time there is a splice. If you get all the way to the brake and still have 12V the problem may be in the brakes themselves.

I was doing some research on etrailers.com and their switches had portable batteries. Called and talked to one of their reps and they thought that all switches had a portable battery set uo...Why I was asking.

Utility trailers w/o a on-board battery have a small 12v battery similar to a emergency light battery in a building. All rv's I have ever owned used the trailers 12v battery.

edit: if you have the small battery it will be mounted in a small box on the trailer tongue. Replacement batteries can be purchased in big box stores in the area that sells emergency lighting.

Hey, I read your post about changing the brake assemblies. I bet you find a wire missing after doing some troubleshooting. Make sure you have 12v thru the switch when it is closed.

I took a test drive after finishing the work. I do have brakes, but not much. Why I decided to try the switch, just to get a full 12 volts and check them out from there.

Received a reply from Jayco customer service. The break away switch receives 12V form the house batteries and/or the charging wire from the TV. They sent me a wiring schematic...should be easier to troubleshoot now.

I was disconnected from the TV when I first tried the break away switch. Will connect to TV and try again...just to see if 12V from TV is getting there.

Just remember the purpose of the breakaway switch does not come into play until the camper is NOT connected to the tow vehicle.

According to Jayco and the schematic...can get battery from the Chargeline or the house batteries. It does work connected to the TV...several years ago was pulling out of a site, making a right hand turn and break away cable got tangled in something in the bed of the truck. The plastic piece pulled out of the switch and wheels locked up...

...and the battery power that activated the brakes came from the house battery as soon as the breakaway switch was operated.

My service tech told me a long time ago if that plug gets pulled you should replace the switch.. They consider them a one use and replace item..

Don't know about that.
I activate mine every now and again and see no reason to change it if it works.

On the other hand, they are not expensive.

Hmmm... someone should tell the weigh station officers about this. Both greenenvy1 and I have had to pull this switch (after crossing the scales with the TV & TT unplugged) to demonstrate that the emergency braking system and battery were working. He was checked in the U.S., I was checked in B.C.

I have never heard that. It just pushes in to keep the contacts apart it looks like. Anyway, I left out of my yard heading to Savannah and made a sharp right turn onto a major highway. We just happen to live over the crests of a hill. Lo and behold, my cable got caught on something and pulled out as I was stretched out across both lanes of this highway. Talk about panicking. Fortunately, we live way out in the boonies and no one was coming. All I knew was the breaks had locked up. I finally got it dragged over to the side of the road and emergency triangles out. Called my dealer and he told me to check the emergency switch first thing. Wow, how dumb can you get. Never even crossed my mind. All I knew was my brakes had locked up. Put the pin back in and off we went, after making sure my cable was free and clear. One thing I can tell you is those switches work real good. They told me to just put it back in and go on, nothing about replacing it.

I think his thinking was the contacts are pretty thin metal and can burn up. You know the RV industry cheaper is better..
