Ours is like that too They make a canvas-like sleeve for the hose that protects it. I wrote to Thetford asking about it and they sent me one free!

Make sure you get a garden hose that's at least 3/4 diameter.

Use this- It's tough rubber but soft enough to jam in place if the threads are messed up.

Keeps connection tight, and comes apart easily.
