Seeking 5th Tailgate
and needing recommendations, both for and against. I'm not having any success deciding simply by reading advertisements. Primarily I want one strong enough to sit on, then cheaper than a cup of coffee, and finally better looking than a star from the 60's (Raquel Welch, Jane Fonda, Ann-Margret).
My application: 2014 F250.

No slight intended to the many other starlets that raised my anxieties back then. Feel free to go off topic and add names to this list.

Get a metal gate. Plastic will break if you stand on it and you will want it to be strong.
The extra $$ is worth it.

The one we have is a Custom Flow. It is metal, but says no more than 200 pounds. Since I exceed that by a bit, I haven't sat on it yet, and may never. I do believe the weight limit has as much to do with the little cables holding it up as with the construction of the gate so a person might be able to get a little bit stronger cables and get over the 200 pound weight limit.

I elected to have a tailgate fabricated ($250); here it is after some dry fitting adjustments. With a couple of minor mods it now seems to fit/ function well. The welder needs to finish up the remaining welds and clean up the messy spots.
He says I can pick it up Monday - where I'll then head over to a finishing shop for a powder black coat. Sorry for the poor quality pics, they were taken blindly, with the camera held over-head.
Looks like I got 2 of my 3 features down, strong and economical. Once finished (with a 17" LED brake light centered on the lowest bar) it'll look purty darn good, just not movie star excellent.

If the $250 covers the paint job that is a great deal!

My additional expenses are: the two cables ($15) that hold it open, the LED brake light ($27/ pair, but I'm only using one) and finishing expenses, still unknown.
But compared to the unknown quality of what I've seen online, at up to $600, I'm very satisfied.

Dropped this off for powder coat yesterday; $50, pick up Thursday morning.
Totals less than $345.

What are you doing for the sockets that allow it to slide into the pins for the stock tailgate?
Looks strong enough to Byounc'e on.

He chose pipe for the pivoting joints. As I recall they are of different size side to side.
An hour ago I checked with the powder coat fellows, they're now saying pick up Friday; apparently they had to order my shade of black coating. I opted out of both the very glossy black and the scary flat black. It'll have only a slight shine to it.
While there I saw some of their work. They had what appeared to be large truck springs in electric blue and some kind of oversized shackles in candy apple red. Wow, did those things say POP!
