Setting up B&W Companion for 5th wheel

Getting ready to FT in the late summer since our 5th wheel 405T will not be delivered until then.

Need some advice on how to set up a B&W Companion hitch.
Vehicle is a 2021 F350 crewcab longbed DRW.

The B&W has 6 different configurations for height and 2 for distance in front of axle.

Which is better? 1" or 3"s in front of axle?
Should I wait until we pick up the trailer before setting up the height?

Just trying to get things ready. Thanks for any advice.

Manual should give the preferred pin location for the vehicle application. Height you won't know. I'd set the height at the highest and adjust as needed once hitched up. Better to be pin high than make contact with the bed rails.

X2.
I'd set it for 1" forward of CL of the rear axle. 3" may be too much and you may have issues getting your tailgate down without hitting the front of the trailer and getting it coupled up without hitting. Behind CL of the axle will make the truck ride bad and if it's too far the front end will feel light in the steering and braking departments.

When I got my non-slider B&W hitch I left it at the setting when I got it and when I finally try it out it was perfect.

Thanks

Good advice.
I'm sure I'll need adjustments when we finally hook up.

Thanks

I had the dealer where I purchase my 43' 2018 Jayco North Point 5th Wheel, install a new B&M Companion 5th wheel hitch 1" in front of the rear axle of my '07 Ford F-350 LB pick up. Gives me good clearance when dropping my tail gate.

BW Companion

I have had 2 ,both on Chevy lwb duallys
The last trailer is very big up front, and I must back into it about straight or I’ll never get gate down. I rotated the ears moving fifth wheel back to help with gate clearance, but it is so tight anyway. I didn’t catscale the axels before, but as far as handling, no noticeable change. I think I remember I’m over 28000gcw afterwards. I did raise up, as I did catch left back corner of bed rail going over uneven drive into gas station. I think I have maybe 5” bed rail clearance and it is all level. Everything looks level, top to bottom. Looks great!
I will say I think it matters more about fitting than weight distribution. That trailer is just plain tight fitting. I like it a bunch but remember it has to be straight if you want the gate down
By all means check the scale and make doggone sure. Play safe out there
