We had three toppers put on at the dealer before we took delivery. I have had them for two years now, camping every month. No problems whatsoever. My units before toppers were a PIA! Had to climb on the roof and sweep off before closing. Now that I am in my 70's, climbing on the roof has become much less of a viable option. Toppers are a must.

I'm with you on this. First unit had no topper. What a pain...always had to climb up and sweep the slide. Next 5er came with a topper. Only issue is cleaning the top of the slide. They still get dirty and when they're 12 or 14' long it's hard to clean them well. Small price to pay though for the convenience of not having to climb and sweep. Ordered my new 321 with toppers on all three slides from the factory. Price was great.
Bite the bullet and have the dealer or CW install them.

I thought about doing it myself, maybe to save a few bucks. But then I thought its probably not really worth the savings. Because I've never installed them before, you would need at least 2 people to assist you, not sure how easy the job really is, if you have an issue with them, you can't really call anyone for warranty work / repair. So I decided to just order toppers with my new camper. Price was good and I'm glad I did.

What brand and model of topper are you using and why?

I've installed a few here and there. Really not that difficult. There are only a few times during the installation where you need a second person. Overall if you're somewhat handy, it's easy and far cheaper to do it yourself. I can elaborated on how I do it if need be. Everybody has an opinion on what works better. The Dometic EZ Deluxe are the ones I've fooled with. Very simple.

We just added toppers to our 317RLOK at the factory and the cost was <$1000. Aftermarket would have run us ~$800 a piece. My advice, get them factory installed.

Whoever quoted $800 a piece doesn't want business. My bigger one was maybe $400 tops. Smaller one I just did on another rig was $272 sent to my door. That includes everything you need except the sealer of your choice. If interested, check out Makarios RV for their complete kits. At least I know what I have on mine and the others and I'm not relying on somebody else's install methods. Sorry, I just don't trust very many manf. Or dealers.

I didn't think the factory could install them? Are you sure the selling dealer didn't install them before your pickup date?

No. They (Crestview RV, Buda, Tx) said they were able to get the factory to add them to the build as ours is still on the line. At that price I couldn't pass it up.

I agree! I'm talking installed, each. Not just materials etc. Which, for some who aren't into doing the install themselves might not balk at. Hopefully if they're done at the factory during the build they should be done right. Or you would think so anyway.

They also said they'd be warranty covered as factory installed should there be any issues.

This is Exactly why I decided to have mine done. Once the dealer told me (Colerain) that they could get Jayco to install them at the factory, I went with this option. I'm glad I did and feel if I ever run into any issues with them over the next 2 years, they are covered by Jayco.

To each their own. Not everybody's up to doing their own stuff. It's not about the money to me. If I do it, there won't be a need for warranty, as it's done right. Anyway, if anybody wants details on doing it yourself, shoot me a PM.

Big JohnD, I will probably hit you up at some point for your valuable insight! I don't have the slide toppers and on the 3 occasions that we've camped with the 5er, it's not fun getting up on the roof and sweeping the slides! Alas, the purchase for 4 slide toppers is not currently in the budget! To be continued...

No idea you could even ask to have the factory do it. I would have... At this point I think I will try to put one on myself. I'm pretty handy...

It's in the option sheets. If there is something extra or "special" you want done or left off, they'll also do pink sheet items, like leave skylights out, delete graphics etc. It's free to ask. Costs a little extra since they have to babysit your unit down the line, but worth it sometimes.

All I did was call Jayco and talked to them and they said they would install them at the factory. One of the very few add ons or changes they would do for the camper I ordered.
