Have any of you had issues with your Jayco? Today I went to an independant RV repair shop and asked for input. They suggested I stay away from Jayco. They said they weren't built very good. I'm not sure about that and I'm sure all manufactures have some issues, but just wondering. He suggested Big Horn or Grand Design. I have looked at all 3 and still like the Pinnacle.

Hi Trublu1068. You can join forums on Grand Design and Heartland or Big Horn. You'll find issues with every make and model, at every price point.

After a long search we have settled on either a Northpoint 387FBTS or a Pinnacle 36FBTS. Both are about 13500lbs. I will be towing with a 2018 GMC 3500 SRW with a tow capacity of 17200. Has anyone had issues with this set up? Should I anticipate getting airbags? Also, any suggestions on a hitch? The bed in my truck is the standard 6.5ft. This will be our first 5th wheel so I don't know alot...yet.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.
Sounds like you're aiming for a larger rig. With that in mind, the focus will be on your available payload. Give a max of 20% for your king pin weight (15k trailer = 3k king pin). You can compensate for some of your payload by offsetting:
* Lighter hitch like an Aluminum Andersen Ultimate Hitch
* Don't max out your trailer weight. Keep it to bare essentials. Don't tow with tanks full.

You'll want to be in spec for towing in regards to liability issues. If you get in an accident and you're towing more than factory, insurance will likely deny your claim and you might even get a ticket from the cops. Not to mention that pesky law suit from the other guys attorney.

With a standard bed, the concern there is bed length. Accounting for the 5th wheel nose, you want some space between the cab and the nose. The longer the bed, the more space you have. Some guys use a sliding/adjustable hitch that moves as needed if you get in a pinch. I use the Anderson hitch for weight and you get a bit more room to work with, without having a slider hitch.

My TV has a 3K payload and about 2K of it is king pin weight, leaving me 1K for stuff like me, wife, dogs, junk. So I have some wiggle room just in case.

Good Luck

I just traded my 06 Ford F350 for a 17 Ford F350 PSD. see my sig below. I am equipping it with a B&W gooseneck and a Anderson 3220 hitch.

My ccc on the new truck is 3450. I am confident that it will be adequate for the job.

I suspect he won’t like it and probably needs to be prepared for a truck purchase.

Hey TxLoser, what are your numbers on your 3500 just curious?

I use a 2018 Ram 3500 SRW to tow my fifth wheel with 6.5 box. An auto sliding hitch is highly recommended. Only problem I had was the factory 20” tires. One tow 1800 miles destroyed the rear tires. Had to replace after the tow. Went with a higher mileage mid/snow tire rated for 60000 miles and added 340 lbs of tow rating per tire.

I have a 2017 gmc 3500 Denali duramax 4x4 SRW long bed. I pull a 2018 northpoint 377. Keep in mind jayco is not accurate on pin weights. My 377 says its 2700lbs its actually 3100lbs empty.

So the first time I hauled my trailer with this truck it was a bit scary. The rear suspension was a bit soft for my liking. I scaled it out full of fuel and me and the wife. And I was 100lbs under my GVWR and actually 100lbs over my rear axle weight rating. After much research I discovered that trucks rear axle weight rating was a direct reflection of the OEM tires. I spoke to a GM engineer and he claimed the axle is capable of much more weight (he wouldn't specify how much more) so I upgraded my tires. Went up 2 sizes (had to do a leveling kit) but I got an extra 600lbs of capacity that way. I also opted to put airbags on more as a comfort thing then a have to thing. In the end loaded up for a month long trip across the country from OR to SC and back. I was 300lbs over my GVWR and and 300lbs over my "posted" rear axle weight rating. (Well with in spec on the tires and airbags). My trailer weight was right at 15k. Keep in mind as I burn fuel I would close the gap on my posted capacity. We did 8500 miles like this with zero issues with the truck. None at all I pulled the rocky's at 65mph. Down hill was again no problem as the engine break did all the work just fine. The worst tank of fuel I got was into a head wind up hill and that tank I got 7.5 mpg the best I got was in TX out running a storm (tail wind mostly flat) I got 16.6 mpg that tank. My entire trip I averaged about 13mpg.

My point is should you get a DRW? Yes you should. Can you make an SRW work? Yes you can. Now I never advocate for running over you trucks "posted" capacities. That said it's not as black and white as some on here claim it is. If your a few 100 llbs over on one or 2 of your capacities are you gonna go to jail? Or get sued? No your no more likely to get in trouble then if your below your capacities. (Some will say I'm wrong and that's fine but this is based on my 20 years in the transportation industry). Fact is if you wipe out with a big RV or little one your likely to get sued. That's a fact. Now I dont recommend negligence that would be pulled a 15k lb rv with a 3/4 ton truck. That's just not smart.. can it do it? Yeah but your not just a few 100lbs over your a few 1000lbs over on you capacities. My logic was its cheap to upgrade the truck I have then to replace it with one I dont want. Good luck I hope this helps.

You are definitely headed for dually territory. Our little 5th wheel maxes out at 11,000#. Our 250 SRW payload is ok for ours, but nothing bigger. The 350 SRW's when we were looking at trucks added a little payload, but not much. If we went to a Northpoint or something like that, we would definitely have a dually. But we use ours for touring as well as camping, and wouldn't want to be parking a dually in tourist spots and downtowns. So we stayed with a smaller fifth wheel and SRW, and that's good for us. We do regret not getting a long bed. Just get the long bed, and don't mess around with sliding hitches or any of that nonsense. (We have a short bed and and a sidewinder- it works well, but a longbed would be much better.)

I know most of the people on here will know this but...for those that don't. Never take your payload from a brochure!

That's right- and, even the sticker doesn't know how much weight you've added. (passengers, hitch, cargo, Aunt Edna on the roof.)

I just keep it simple. My GVWR is 10,000# Last time I weighed the truck it was 7500 pounds with a full tank. 10,000 - 7500 = 2500 Payload I had left.

I've added stuff since then, so my available payload is now less than 2500. That's not a lot when you're talking 5th wheels.
