surge protector

How many people use surge protectors, is it worth it. If yes which ones are better quality, there is so many out there. My trailer is 50 amps so I guess I should get a 50 amp even if most campground have 30 amps service?

Thanks

I had a surge guard on my old travel trailer. On my new fiver, I installed the progressive dynamics EMS. Install is pretty straight forward.

The best way to go
Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C

The 2nd best way to go
Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X

You need more than just Surge Protection.

X3, kind of: My Progressive Dynamics EMS is a portable unit, so not really installed.

I don't and have camped for 40 + years with no damage from a surge. That being said I have my Wifco coverter, microwave, radio I have never used and a TV that sits in the closet.

If you have a lot more goodies or have seen or heard of surge events where you camp then maybe it is a good idea.

I do have a surge protector on my big tv and computer at home.

Roger makes a good point. Many folks have camped decades without a surge suppressor with no issues. There are also quite a few that don’t and have had electronics fried. There’s another 2 camps that have a suppressor and think they’ve been protected and the other camp that have one and either don’t think they’ve needed it or don’t know.
I’m of the opinion that I will always have a surge suppressor. It has reported a few power “events”. Would I have had damage? Don’t really know. But I’ve got one and will always have one. I don’t have just a suppressor, it’s a Progressive EMS. I’m also a fan of PI.

In the six years I’ve had one twice it has shutdown power due to low voltage. I don’t know if any damage would have occurred had I continue to have operated in that low voltage situation but I’m glad I was made aware of it. The EMS also gives me some idea of power usage when I’ve got different devices running. In my opinion the $200 - $300 is worthy the peace of mind.

Water pressure regulator and EMS are the first two items I purchased. Working in campgrounds for the last 6 years I have seen the benefits of both. Our water pressure here is about 140 lbs...you HAVE to have a regulator...also voltage has dropped several times and my power was cut off till the voltage went back to normal. It's cheap insurance on both items.

Happy Camping !

Sorry. I meant Progressive Industries. Not Progressive Dynamics. They make power centers and chargers.

X2. Sort of like insurance, better have it and not need it.

I have always used the Progressing Industries model that has much more than just surge protection. On more than 1 occasion I have had to request the park repair the electrical post due to poor connections, with the device I can show them in an instant what the problem is. This summer had a continued series of low voltage outages. Park staff came and realized the plug was worn and causing issues, replaced it right away and no more issues.
