Watchdog is another popular brand (but way behind the top two)...

I meant Hughes WatchGuard, not “Watchdog”. I did not catch the edit in time for live edit.

That’s a great price! Get a cable lock for it.

We cable lock ours when we feel we should. This one's a little long, but the length comes in handy for other uses. I just wrap it around the pedestal a few times. The cable's 3/8".

I use a cable lock too. Besides for the theft situation, it's also came in handy holding the EMS tight to the pedestal when the 30 amp outlet seemed loose and worn (a popular issue with 30 amp outlets), and the plug wanted to pull itself out, due to the weight of the EMS.

Was it the weight? Or was the whip too short putting the body if the EMS too close to the box resulting in it pulling out?

I’m looking hard at the Hughes. Nice long whip and I like the Bluetooth status feature.

Both.

I've seen the outlet too loose, causing it to pull out. I've also experienced the pedestal trying to force it out (probably because the outlet was too loose to stay tightly in).

Pulling the cable lock tight fixed both issues.

FWIW, in the TechnoRV survey I mentioned above, exactly half of respondents lock their external units and one half of one percent have reported theft. Of those reporting theft, half were locked

I lock ours, but primarily so I remember where the lock is. I have one of those plastic lockable cases that fit around the plugs and that you could probably break with a swift kick.

I feel the hardwired unit is the way to go. It eliminates all the issues around the pedestal and makes setup faster.

Portable Progressive EMS. I use a chain and lock. Like the ability to snug it up with the chain versus using a cable lock.

Would you get the portable or the hardwired. Don’t if I did this right or not.

I bought the Hughes in portable form. If it takes a dump, I can just unplug it and go about my business. Plus the replaceable surge module is nice, and I’m sure I’ll like the bluetooth feature where I can see what’s going on w/ my tablet.

I also like that its got whips on both end of the unit, and I like that the pedestal end/whip is longer.

I personally would get the hardware. I like keeping everything as simple as possible when I come and go at the campground.

Progressive portable.. I really don't care about being able to remotely read status other than at power up. If power is on, I know things are good. This is year 5 with my unit.

Looked at Camp Addict and their thoughts were the top two was Progressive and Southwire. Any thoughts?

I just don’t like the form factor of the Progressive portable. I prefer a whip at each end; makes for a better post connection and makes for easier connections if you choose to leave the EMS in your power compartment as I do. So that left SurgeGuard and Watchdog. I already have a autoformer from Hughes and found it to be high quality. So I bought another Hughes product.

I just bought the Hughes Watchdog. I think it will meet my needs, electrical and financial!
