Surge protectors
Hey everyone, looking for some information on surge protectors. 2020 357MDOK, obviously 50 amp service. What is everyone using? I would prefer a hardwired unit to make life a bit easier.

Of all those that have these (Progressive), how many have had it protect you in a surge and had to replace it?
E10 Surge Occurrence None The unit has protected your RV from a surge event and is not covered under warranty. This unit will continue to provide error code information but will not protect your RV from future surge events.

I also have the Progressive Industries EMS
https://www.progressiveindustries.net/ems-hw50c
But if I was getting a new one I would give this one very serious consideration (probably get)

Progressive is definitely the most popular here.
But, many discussions about hardwired versus portable, in case of a failure. If the unit takes a hit, and gets knocked out, how will you handle it?

My progressive hardwire unit is located just behind my converter. 4 screws and it’s right there.

Southwire SurgeGuard here. External.
Eric and Tami Johnson at TechnoRV.com just published a great article on the subject...
https://www.technorv.com/articles/do-you-need-an-rv-surge-protector/
The article was written with editorial input from MiKe Sokol and other industry authorities.
A survey of something like 3300 respondents showed that progressive and SurgeGuard evenly split the vast majority of the market share.
Watchdog is another popular brand (but way behind the top two) because the end user can replace blown surge suppressor modules. But the article arrives at the conclusion that this feature is not the advantage that it might seem to be.
I have purchased my GPS and TPMS systems fro technoRV. They are known for good support and product knowledge.

Should also say that most everyone is suggesting a EMS, not just a surge protector.
I’m not sure if in the last couple years if I’ve ever had a surge, but lots of low voltage, missing neutral or grounds. I haven’t had any reversed polarity either.
Point is you need more protection than just for surges.
As I’m thinking about it, surge is probably very important in lightning strike areas. We do get many around here.

saved me from a reverse polarity hook up at a campground. And one low current when we were away.. nothing broke. I have read stories where it has broken and progressive sent the parts or a whole new unit to the destination the camper was at.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. I called the dealer for some other things this morning and they had progressive Ems pt-50x's on sale for $299 so I had them hold one for me.

I use the Hughes Amp Power Watchdog Smart Bluetooth Surge Protector with Auto Shutoff PWD. I like that it has an app that I can view on my phone at anytime (I'm within Bluetooth range).

Same here...I use the portable one to keep smoke and fire outside of my RV in case of a serious malfunction.
It's also handy to check the power at the pedestal BEFORE I back in.

I’ve found the portable Progressive’s male whip to the post to be too short sometimes. It causes the body of the EMS to pull off the post because it doesn’t hang low enough to clear the box.

In the event of a surge the Progressive unit will have to be totally replaced. The Hughes EPO models have replaceable surge modules that can be replaced very easily. I think the 50a module is $50 give or take. I have the hardwired 30a model.
