Suspension Wet Bolts

Granted I should have been a bit more observant, but still Jayco missed the mark.

I have a 2018 Jayco Pinnacle 36KPTS and was getting it ready for a trip from Michigan to Minnesota last month. I confirmed the brakes were all properly adjusted, gave the wheel bearings a shot of grease, set the tires to proper inflation, and generally a good once over underneath. This is when I discovered that my Fiver is equipped with wet bolts in the suspension. The problem is that they are installed with the grease zerk towards the tire and without a special angle adapter for your grease gun must remove the tire(s) to grease.

As I did not have time I just removed the tires and gave them a shot of grease, but next spring when we get out for the season I will be installing 90 degree grease fittings. To me hey should have been installed with the zerk facing in to allow easier access.

I installed my own wet bolt kit. Grease zerts are pointing in. Nuts are facing out.
Keep in mind the bolts have knearling on the head end shaft so they don't turn. Might be easier in your case to swap all the straight zerts for 45* or 90*zerts.
Having the zerts facing inboard means more crawling around and over under the axles to lube.
I marked all the nuts with red paint. Can tell at a glance if one has loosened off.
Just some thoughts for you to consider.
Oh and you did retorque the lug nuts after having the wheels off?

Good Advice, Thanks RoadrunnerII.

That is what I will be doing next spring, adding 90 degree zerts. As for the wheel torque I have a DeWalt 1/2" drive torque wrench and Torque Sticks for both my Fiver Lug Nuts as well as the Lug nuts on my tow vehicle. (I did confirm they (torque stick) are within 5 Ft. Lbs. of rated torque with my Snap-On torque wrench)

At least you had the grease fittings. When I went to install a wet bolt kit because the suspension was creaking and growling, I found that our Eagle HT had the bronze bushings, but no grease fittings.

I'm a member of the group of people who believe that a proper greasing of the wheel bearings entails tire removal and hand packing them. With the wheels off, it doesn't matter which way the zerks are facing.

Just a thought, but a 90* may not work. There may not be enough clearance between the head of the bolt and the zerk to get the end of the grease gun on. I've had it happen before. Zerks are cheap, I'd buy 90's and 45's just in case.

I just purchased one of these. Looked like a good idea and cheap enough.

I have one of those also. Have you tried it yet? I thought it would be an excellent way to get to those zerks. Problem is the grease squirts out everywhere but into the zerks. Good idea but not manufactured well.

No I haven't even received it yet. If it doesn't work, I will just have to pull the wheels to get to them. My plan was to grease twice a year. If it doesn't work, they may only get greased once a year when repacking the bearings.

KDT tools used to make a grease gun attachment that was straight but you slid it onto zerk fittings with minimal access. I did not see it bt google "grease gun angle attachment" and I found several. might be wirth a try.

Wet Suspension Bolts

I saw the posting about wet suspension bolts and their need for grease.
What do they look like and how would I know if I have any on my trailer?
Thanks for any help.

Tight spot

Well there are specialized grease fitting tool s that gets in hard to reach tight angles such as 90 degree couplers for grease guns not pricey
Lincoln Lubrication 5883 Slotted Right Angle 90 Degree Coupler
Lincoln Lubrication 5883 Slotted...
There is a coupler that is L shaped too
Worked for me on fitting at bottom of spindle where otherwise I would have remove the wheel of the tractor to get at it

Thanks for bringing this up. I was just greasing the wet bolts last night, and one of them (on the leaf spring) refused to take grease. I took the fitting off and put it on the grease gun, and it flows fine.
Should I heat it up?

Did you jack up trailer on that side? May have to unfortunately.
The wet bolt may have been installed with the grease outlet against the spring on a pressure point. The outlet is supposed to be parallel to the frame not on top or bottom.

I did have it jacked up at the time to grease the wheel bearings, too. I'll try it this morning unjacked. Thanks.

Leaf spring bolt

If your have trouble not taking grease heating it up might be messy if there is a (neoprene rubber bushing inside if not well u could be ok heating it up otherwise try taking out the fitting use a prick tool and wd40 loses it up new fitting than pump the grease again

Sometimes you have to have all the jacks down and some of the weight off the suspension to get them to take grease.

I have one of those and it works “ok”. Gotta get it on just right or it’ll leak and not push the grease thru the zerk.
