Swapped Out Lead Acid with AGM Batteries

I replaced my two 12 volt batteries with 4 6 volt AGM batteries back in July. I recently read that AGM requires 14. 4 volts.

Will the converter in my 2016 Pinnacle support AGM batteries. I haven't noticed any issues but recently read that AGM batteries need to be charged at a higher voltage than lead acid and was wondering if I was damaging my batteries and not knowing it.

I had also posed the same question to PD and they responded quickly with an affirmative answer. According to PD you're good to go with AGM.

Good upgrade. I swapped in 6 (took the shelf out above the batteries). I am currently using the OEM cables but am upgrading when the weather gets warmer.

Just curious, what "brand" converter/charger do you have in your Pinnacle?

My 2018 JayFlight came with a WFCO converter/charger and would never jump into 'bulk mode' (14.4Vdc) when needed, best I could get was 13.6Vdc and took forever to recharge my battery bank when boondocking. Upgraded to a PD product and solved that problem.

Rustic Eagle Northpoints and Pinnacles come with PD’s
Too bad you have to spend the extra money on upgrading.

2016 Northpoints and Pinnacles came with a pretty much unusable battery compartment. The compartment you have would be a dream for me. I’m still trying to figure out a easy system to get more AH in my Northpoint.

I hope Jasum doesn’t read this. I know what his advice to me will be

Appreciate the feedback...., and wish Jayco would have incorporated PD's across all models.

I'd like to replace my current battery which is 7 years old with a AGM. I have a PD converter but it is also 7 years old but functions perfectly. Guess I'll contact PD and ask. Were AGM batteries common 7 years ago?

I took out the shelf in my northpoint and installed a 31 series AGM. It completed its 4th season last year and I've had no charging issues at all with it. I have a pair of 6v batteries that feed a Xantrex inverter that powers the residential fridge.

Just finishing things up. Need to lag down the inverter, clean up solar cables on the roof. Will post a couple of pics when it is completed.

I have four 160w Renogy panels on the roof to a 50 amp victron mppt charge controller. I also have the victron battery monitor which I love and just wired up the go power 3000w Inverter.

I can monitor both the charge controller and my battery monitor from the victron app on my phone.

Hi Bob,
I have a Progressive Dynamics (PD4590) Converter. As others have said that is standard on Pinnacles.
I am just finishing up with a solar install so I just wanted to make sure everything would play well together.

Awesome, I love all the room you have. Squeezing four 6 volt batteries into the space I have was a huge challenge. You did a very nice job! I would love to add another pair of 6 volt batteries.

According to Mr. Google, AGM batteries were developed around 1980 and their first application was military. So they've been around for a while. As to whether your converter is a smart charger, like you said, you'll have to contact PD support. I just used PD's contact form on their web page and they got back to me fairly quickly. FWIW, my converter is a PD4060K.

Thanks for the info Don. My converter does have the charge wizard so I'm probably ok but I'll make sure first.

Nice. We need pics. [emoji23]

I added the Victron battery monitor at the same time but didn’t mount it yet. It’s zip tied in place in the compartment and I’ve been using the app. Also upgraded the 1200 watt inverter to a 2000 watt inverter. Still Xantrex so the control panel was plug and play. Got the inverter and batteries at the Hershey RV Show for a really good price.

Pics are coming... I love the Victron battery monitor. A battery monitor is essential to knowing what is happening with your batteries.

We hooked up our GoPRo 3000 watt inverter so that it powers the whole coach. Our Xantrex 1000 watt inverter only powered our fridge and a couple of usb outlets.

This is a new experience for us. Now I am trying to figure out what our panels can do for us and how much we can use our microwave, kettle etc.

Our new inverter pretty much gives us the ability to run anything, air conditioner included but sucks power from our four 6 volt AGM batteries quickly. So it is a learning experience trying to figure out where the drains are coming from.
