The best Route

Hello guys, I know that some of you have probably travel that way but I'm looking for the best route to go.

We have a long trip coming up in September leaving OR going to Sparks, NV google have us going through MT. Shasta going to Lassen National Forest and going to Plumas National Forest.

Is there a better way so I can stay on the interstate or HWY and not going through the back roads?

You don’t say where in Oregon, but your quickest, safest route would be to take I-5 south into California. At Redding, take Highway 44 east toward Lassen NP and Susanville. There, it’s Hwy 395 down into Reno. Just made that trip myself with the TT and stayed in Sparks. All good highway. If you are staying at the Sparks Marina RV Park, DON’T follow your GPS instructions to go on I-80, but get off at N. McCarran Blvd and follow it around to the marina. There’s a reason they call part of I-80 the “spaghetti bowl.” Where in Oregon are you going to be?

Oh, sorry but we are leaving from Canyonville, OR which is right off of I-5 going south. We are going to stay at the Sparks Marina RV Park, so I will write this down and have it when we go. Thank you again.

Okay so do we go to Susanville and then go down to 395 toward Reno?

After looking at the map I see it now I just have to remember to not to get on I-80 but follow N. McCarran Blvd.

Yes. It’s a scenic drive and relatively flat after coming out of Susanville. Fyi, there are two nice rest stops — Bogard before Sussnville and Honey Lake after it. Canyonville to Redding is freeway with a few mountain passes of decent grade. Plenty of passing lanes though.

The biggest concern for the time you are traveling is wildfires. Last fall they were prevalent in Southern Oregon and Northern California and we’ve already had one that nearly closed I-5 north of Redding. You’re going through heavy forest north and east of Redding and anything could happen. Just keep an eye on the news and Highway conditions. Here’s the Cali Highway website: QuickMap

Thank you so much LuckyDuck, and hopefully it will not be bad I know that right when we do go it is known for wildfires.

The last time we came from Sparks, NV which was last year it was heavily smoke in that area but I'm trying to think positive I will watch the forecast though to make sure that we will be able to travel to and from Sparks.

Good luck! There is a lot to do and see in the Reno-Sparks area. The RV park is an easy walk to a nice trail around the marina lake and the Legends open-air mall and a huge 3-story Scheels sporting goods store. And the park itself is excellent.

The last time we were there we was only there for one day so we didn't go nowhere but this time we are planning 14 days stay there. We will get around there to see some of it this time and thank you LuckyDuck.

You will definitely want to take a day trip down to Lake Tahoe when you’re there. Doesn’t take long and it’s one in a million. Then there’s the National Auto Museum in Reno, and...
