If I had my way i would be making $200 a month payments right now...

The wife said no, so i have to fix it to save it... Motivation has not much to do with this. :/

I couldn't own if I had to pay to repair at $137 an hour, my bank account is not that big.

Another no picture update: We re-secured the front lower hitch area. I replaced all of the OSB wood spacers with new, installed better insulation, and secured the living crap out of the sheet metal. Originally, the metal had 1 or 2 screws per square foot, which even with the rotting wood, did not secure it properly. It was floppier than a... (insert mental image here)

Not only was the metal floppy, it was also off square by about 1 inch at the front corner, diagonally from the electric jack stand switch. (that means alot). Now that everything is square, and resealed externally, i can focus on the insides. We have had really heavy rain the last couple of days, and there have been 0 leaks. I cant say enough about the ProGuard RV roof product. I only applied a thin layer, but the stuff works amazingly. Its fully dried now, and the surface is one solid sheet of rubber. Ill take some pictures soon.

Update With pictures!

Here is the newly repaired bottom side. With a bajillion screws, and fresh wood. Its SOLID. We temp sealed it with butyl tape. Ill beautify it later.

I got the forward floor up to remove the remaining carpet and and luan paneling. The screws holding this floor down were mostly sheared already. Probably came that way.

only thing between this hole and the floor is a sheet of moisture barrier.

I got it back down, and after cleaning up all of the remaining loose carpet, its ready to install insulation.

Its pink!

Today im going to get the paneling installed and get ready for paint.

Great job! Can you imagining paying a dealer or someone to do this? When you are DIYer you can be proud of doing the job right. Roofs are still a weak point in the RV industry. There are very good sealing products available, but they simple choose the lesser quality because of the cost factor. In the long run the owner has to do this in order to protect his investment.

I always was told that the kraft paper on insulation should go to the inside.. is that a concern on your insulation job?

There's a member on here who bought a new Jayco, and the first thing he did was get the roof re-coated. Literally took it from the dealer to the coating place. When i get a new unit, i will probably do a roof automatically, to prevent having to do this again.

Apparently it does not matter where the paper faces, according to the manufacture. A building inspector may disagree. I simply ripped a 2x4 insulation batt in two, and used the mating pair for the spaces. so some have paper, some don't. Note: the stuff expands to 3 times its thickness once its un-rolled. it doesnt look like its very thick in that roll.

Norty1; on a RV it doesn't matter how the insolation is applied. In a home they use ply and a breathing barrier on the outside and a plastic foil vapor barrier on the inside.
The RV industry uses no vapor barrier in or outside, maybe on the high end units.
RV's are recreational just like a tent to keep dry............you hope. When it gets cold the furnace eats the propane fast to warm the outdoors............lol

Twin, your project is amazing. I enjoy your posting your progress and the pics that help me understand. It looks like you may have turned the corner when you won the roof leak battle. That sow's ear is starting to look more like a purse. I know you have a long way to go, but it's lookin' good. Awsome set of skills and even more persistence!

Looking very good. I sometimes wish that I had bought a older unit that needed some work and just made it my way. Sure would have saved a TON of money.. Again great job keep posting updates.

Thanks for the words so far everyone... this project is not was i was planning on when i bought it. I'm missing out on a camping trip in April because of this crap! (Unless i can get it done...)

Anyway, i got the paneling installed last night...

I think i got the plugs and wires back where they originally came out.

This corner looks pretty good, but can you see the darker spot toward the forward corner?

I missed the marks on my measuring. Since a cabinet will be here, i'm not worried about the looks. Not worth the extra money to spend on lumber to make it right.

So, did you notice that dark spot? its a WATER LEAK! And its not from the roof. I have had the insulation out of the unit for days now, as well as never seeing any water dripping from anything! as soon as i got that panel on though, it came... I suspect its coming from some open holes on the screw track thats outside on the nose, i ripped off that vinyl covering when it was dry, but i still noticed no leaks, till i put some staples in the "sponge".

Does anyone know what that vinyl stuff is called? i need to get a bunch of it coming...

Paint has begun...

Can't really say this is the best idea I've had... but with kilz primer and a mildew resistant paint, i should be ok as long as i don't have major leaks again. We have had torrential downpours and hailstorms leaving 2 inches of hail behind, and no leaks whatsoever from the roof. The lower nose corners that had leaks for the most part have ceased, but i haven't had a chance to re-seal the exterior sides because of the rain.

Also, when the paint is drying, it gets REALLY humid in there... so I'm running my generator, fan, and heater to save my house power bill.

Another update... Just finished with the floor. $.69 a tile at home depot. Don't need no stinkin' high end stuff here, this is a Jayco, not a DRV...

Gotta get the steps finished with some guards, and get the bed in, may even get the ceiling painted. After tomorrow I gotta pull it out of its spot and park it elsewhere for a few days to finish ANOTHER project that's been held up due to my shoulder...

Nice save! BTDT with my old 94 Dutchmen 22' 5er. Windows leaked and rotted the wall and floor. You might want to consider pulling the windows and reseal the frames. I used an adhesive backed foam. I hate that butyl tape. I did every window and stopped ALL the leaks.
The wheel wells on that Dutchmen were rotted through and sealed with gallons of RTV sealant by the PO. I missed it when buying. So I made wheelwell liners out 5052 aluminum, cleaned everything out replaced the wood on the inside and installed the liners from the outside. We used the HECK out of that camper for 3 years before moving to our Jayco.

So far i only NEED to pull one window. So i want to see how that goes before i tackle the rest. Right now, they aren't a priority for me, but will be part of the ongoing work i need to do.

I've had good look with butyl tape in the past with other projects, but i dont think i would use them with windows.

👍 TwinCommander! Your doing a great job, and when it's done, you'll be proud of what you did with your own two hands! Congrats, and keep the updates coming...
