Tire Presure

Good Day
I know this is an old topic but most of the forms talk about tire pressure at 50 and 60 PSI.
We are heading South to start our first full-time RV trip. We depart Canada on the 1st of November.
Went to check my tire pressure before traveling and the four of them come in low around 55 to 58 PSI. When I look at the tag from Jayco on the street side of the 5er it reads 80 PSI Cold. I note the the Towmax STR Powerking, ST 235/80 R16 state max PSI is 80.
Should I be filling my tires to the MAX 80 PSI???

Fill to the max on oem tires.

The tire are sized for the load, and nothing more. Lower tire pressure, puts heat into the tire, which shortens their life.

As you travel to warmer climates you will need to check and adjust the cold pressure. Keep a close idea on those Tow Max tires for any bulges.

They are supposed to be run at 80 psi.

And as they heat up, the tire pressure will rise. They probably fluctuate as much as 5 psi or more due to temperature fluctuations. And as Norty1 said, keep and eye out for bulges. My towmax tires lasted for over 2 years and 10,000 miles and then two started separating on one trip. I wound up replacing all five(4 plus spare).

+1. I'm in the process of replacing my TowMax tires with Maxxis M8008 (4 tires, I will leave the spare alone for now) I have tread separation on at least one tire. I caught it before it blew so I was lucky. I will always run my trailer tires at max sidewall cold pressure, and check pressure and measure temp on them frequently.

Good luck with your trip!

Edit: My Towmax lasted two years from purchase and about 3-4K miles. The Towmax have date codes very close to the manuf date of my trailer.

I'll climb on my soapbox and shout the virtues of a tire pressure monitor.
After learning how much damage a failing tire can cause and how frequent ST tire failures seem to be (thank you JOF!!) I bought my monitor and haven't looked back.
I've had 2 epic tire failures (thank you Towmax!) and my monitor warned me of both before any damage to the trailer happened.

I maintain tire pressures for everything to with 2 psi of manufacturers recommendations. Or, to what I see molded on the sidewall. Never over but, within 2 psi under the max.

Have never had a problem yet! Other than screws, nails and that sort of thing. 12 years of RV ownership and no issues.....yet. Perhaps the tire gods have been with me.

I was looking back on the OP question about 50 psi. The reason 50 psi comes up alot is many TT's run 50 psi. 5ver are bigger and heavier so the tires need to be bigger and heavier too, which means more psi.

If your question is directed at me it's from Minder Research. Lots of good votes for TST monitor system too. IMHO, getting one is more important than which one you get. The Minder needs a signal booster and I think the TST does not. The Minder reports temperature as well as pressure but I think TST does as well.

I had tread separation on all four of my Tomax Powerkings. Upgraded to 17.5 inch wheels and H rated tires from Trailertiresandwheels.com.so far so good.

I did the factory upgrade to G rated tires but spare tire in on a cheap 80 psi rim and e rated tire. I thought the upgrade would include the spare also

I put a G614 as a spare. On second thought I wish I had just kept the best E rated tire for a spare.
I may never need it and I don't rotate the spare.
I could have saved some money that way.

Inflate them to the max pressure and check the tires and the pressure everyday before departure , it takes only 5mn ;-)

Tire Pressure Monitor

Our kids want to buy my husband a pressure monitoring system for our not yet ordered Pinnacle RSQS..can someone please recommend which TST system is adequate...I'm guessing you can add additional sensors at a later date? Is the 4 sensor model a good starting point? Thanks!

Yes, I agree. Fill it to the max PSI on OEM tires.

I have the TST 507 system with standard non-flow through sensors. I originally bought the kit with 4 sensors for the trailer and after the first trip I ordered 4 more sensors for my truck. I leave the truck sensors on 24/7/365, but remove the trailer sensors when I am going to be at a site for longer than a few days. The sensors are turned off when pressure is removed so the batteries last longer. I always travel with spare batteries, 0-ring, and valve stem gaskets for the sensors. I can change a battery and both gaskets in minutes and only change one when the monitor alerts me to a low battery. Since my sensors are approaching 5 years old I also carry a spare set (2) of sensors. I am so used to having this system that I will not travel without it.

Would I buy this system again? You Bet!

My question is: do the sensors and monitoring system tell you the PSI of your tires while parked at a campsite? Or, do your tires have to be turning in order for you to know the air pressure in each one? If this system can provide accurate air pressure while static, then I would get one. Because I normally check air pressure in my trailer tires (and refill the air, if needed) before I hook it up and tow it home.

My TST indicates both. I turn it on before leaving or the day before and get a readout.
Only time I have to adjust is after large temp changes.
