Our 2009 Ram 2500 diesel towed our trailer (engine power and transmission) just fine. But, rear springs were not up to the task. The trailer was right at the payload limit of the truck and it rested just above the bump stops, which meant about 3" of suspension travel. I installed TImbrens and it worked OK.
The 2017 Ford did not need any helper springs to tow the same load.
Not sure what a 2001 Ram has for springs or payload, but, you may need to consider airbags ot other additional springs if you are over the payload capacity of your truck. If not towing any distance this may not be an issue for you.
