Towing the Eagle Premier 361REQS

Hi all- we just put our deposit down on an Eagle Premier 361REQS. We decided to find the camper before buying the truck so we could get exactly what we wanted. Now we are truck searching.
This camper is on the large side at 39ft and 15000lbs.
I have done tons of research about trucks. But I am still curious about what ya'll are using to tow this larger camper?

My recommendation is 350/3500. I went with SRW as the truck is also my daily driver and I didn’t want to have to deal with the parking a DRW at the office. I would have liked the lower gear ratio that a DRW offers though

You need a 350/3500 minimum. I won’t say you “need” or “must” have a dually but it would be most folks suggestion.

Totally agree with full ton. Would also suggest diesel and 8 foot box.

I tow a 40ft. 16,500 lb. Jayco 355W toyhauler with a 2016 GMC crewcab SRW diesel standard box (6.5 ft.) , and it works very well. A very important item to get in a truck, which most new diesel’s have is the diesel exhaust brake. I would never tow if I didn’t have it. It is a breeze going down grades, without having to apply much braking at all.

KassidyAnn,

We have the same trailer. I needed to upgrade from a 2500 to a GMC 3500 diesel SRW. Even with the 3500, I'm close on all our weights. Probably would have been better off with extra payload if I would have gone with 3500 DRW, but wanted the SRW because the truck is also my daily drive.

Definitely look at 1 ton trucks, you'll be happy you did.

Good luck and hope this is of some help.

Towing 361REQS

We have the same camper. Started with a F250 diesel with upgraded 1 ton springs. Just upgraded to a Ram 3500 DRW. 6.7 liter diesel.8foot box. Love how it handles the 5th wheel. Installed a Curt 24K hitch in the factory pucks.

Dont let them scare ya, I daily drive to work and all over with my DRW. It can be a pain sometimes but most of the time its the only way to go. Just like anything you learn to drive it. But you really look cool and people always comment and think your truck is the bomb and its only a $1500 option in the ram and you end up with all the goodies and alot better towing platform.

His must be the most boring videos ever Get to mostly watch him drive while talking. But then I don't watch many vlogs as I can get the info faster by reading than watching someone prattle on.

We have the 361REQS also and now tow with a SRW. The first two winter I towed with a DRW but got tired of daily driving it. It wasn't much good for any offroad travel on dirt trails either as it was too fat.

Last winter we had the Chev and went into way more out of the way places than I would have with the DRW. Had been considering a MH/Jeep but will stay with the fiver now.

My REQS is heavy on the pin and at the GVWR and I have no issues towing. The truck sits flat with no bags. I am ~100# over on the rear axle. I do notice some squirm in my butt when following dirty air trucks (tankers & car haulers).

I have the 361 REQS that I tow with my F-350 diesel 4 x 4 crew cab SRW with 8ft bed and a standard 3.73 rear end. I tow with no problems at all. Sometimes towing down the interstate I actually forget its back there. Hills are no problem at all but I have never towed it though mountains.
To me the only real difference between the SRW vs DRW is stability while towing. I really haven't had that issue. If it comes up usually you can slow down. Rear end gear ratio availability that would be needed for towing that rv are probably the same.

My $0.02

I pull a Pinnacle 31RETS (38 ft, 15000 gross) with a 2016 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty with 6.7 Cummins without a problem.
I assume you know that if the GVWR of your truck and trailer break 26,000 lbs. then you need a non-commercial class A license... with my setup in CA I have a “5th wheel endorsement “ which means my Class C becomes A when I’m pulling the Pinnacle. But the 26k threshold would apply if I went to a 3500.

Good point John91420,
Depending on where you are, 350/3500 may require commercial license , plates, and insurance.
I called my insurance company and they said if I could prove that it’s for pulling a RV then they would waive the commercial requirement on the insurance. I never ended up w a 3500 so I never persued the license and commercial plate issue.
