Trailer Brake Gain

For those you have a RAM for towing where do you usually set the gain on the trailer brake?

On a North Point it would be at least on HD electric 7, but for every RV Combo it is different. Wire length and also are the brakes finished settling has influence on the situation. When I replaced my brake assemblies, I had it on HD 10, but are scaled back to HD 4

Mine grabbed at 10 on an f150 factory controller but like the previous poster said, it all depends on your specific setup. There are plenty of setup guides online. Generally, you'll go 25mph, fully engage brake controller with the button and dial it up or down until the trailer brakes lock up.. Then you'll dial it down one notch from there.

I have an SRW vs your DRW, but the 5er are similar in weight. Brakes are setup as Heavy Electric and gain at 7

AKRUBBE, Yes, via the driver display or for RAM the EVIC. 16' 2500 RAM Diesel pulling a 2017 Pinnacle. Slightly heavier than yours. What I do is simply hook up the 5th, set the gain to 5, pull out onto a straight flat section of road, accelerate to 15 mph and slip the tranny in neutral, DO NOT APPLY FOOT BRAKE, but use the Brake Controller and squeeze them together until it stops the entire rig. If it stops to slowly, repeat the above after you apply more gain, repeat until you are comfortably with its stopping power. You do not necessarily want to skid/slide the RV brakes but you want them to support with stopping. My gain is set to 7.5. You may find that when you pull up to a stop sign and release the foot brake that the RV brakes may release a second later. Normal. Happy RV'ing, SKIDAWG

2014 dodge Dually, Towing 2016 375BHFS set at 6.5 HT. Waiting to hear from service center, last short trip one wheel was skidding. I would bet it's time to deal with the brake issue many have had.

There's no standard setting. Settings will be all over the map based on each trailer's specific braking requirements.

FWIW, don't know if they've corrected the issue with a firmware update over the last year or so, but the newer ('14 and up) Ram OEM brake controllers have had problems producing more than 8 volts of braking voltage. Some trailers need up to 12 volts for maximum braking. I had this very issue with our '16 Ram 3500. Bypassed the Ram OEM brake controller and installed a Tekonsha P3 and all is well.

If you're not getting enough braking with the Ram OEM brake controller set to max (10), you can get slightly more voltage (braking) by setting the Ram OEM brake controller to heavy electric over hydraulic.

It will also depend on the condition of the trailer brakes. Before my brakes were redone I was on max 10. Jayco replaced all my GREASY Brakes. I now run at 4.5 to 5.0. If it's wet or on a gravel road a setting of 6.5 or more will lock them up.
