Trailer Tire Blowouts

I'm just curious how many RV's have had blowouts? I have a friend that has had either 4 or 5 blowouts. 43 ft 5er says he put higher rated tires but still just had another blowout today. Says he was going 65. I think he was going faster! I have RVed from central Texas to Louisiana Florida and Arkansas for 4 years and never had even a low tire. Let me y'alls experiences! Thanks

Nope. At just over 2 years, replaced my OEM Rainer tires with Goodyear Endurance and went up to load range E.

I have had 2 and they occurred just over an hour apart in about 75 miles.
Overloaded? Nope.
Low pressure? Nope.
High speed? Nope.
Made in China? Yup.
Luckily my TPMS alerted me to both failures and I sustained no damage.

I have had blowouts on all three of the last fifth wheels I owned. All goodyear Marathons of different size, LR and country of origin. My current rig is 38 1/2' went thru 2 sets of LR E tires until I changed to Goodyear 614's LR G.

No more tire problems in the last 4 years.

Just like everything on rv's, they seem to be engineered to just be over the weight they are designed to carry. The G tires gives me the margin I want.

Goodyear did stand behind their product on a few occasions with replacements and even paid some damages on one blowout.

I used to have a popup. Went from Illinois to Mouse World in Florida, 2 on the way down and 1 on the way back. Did not understand about going over 65 or the tires were just junk china bombs. Or both.

I had 4 blow outs and one with a broken belt. All China tires. The last blow out damaged the trailer. So I put on Firestone LT tires and never had trouble after. Trailer actually pulled better, handled better and rode better.
This Jayco came with the endurance tires and so far no issues. They are wearing good. All the China tires I had never wore even. I will never run China tires. I'm curious how well this endurance tires will hold up. If good I will replace with the same. If not American made LT tires.

Into our 4th season with original LT off-road tires - close to 18K miles with no trouble so far. I am rather obsessive about checking the tires and ensure they are always as max sidewall pressure on any driving day as well as checking temps any time I check the hub temps. Always covered when stored as well. They will be 5 years old per date code next March so I have all winter to think about whether or not I will arbitrarily replace them at the beginning of next season.

On our 1st 5vr was used & it turns out the tires were bad. Had a blow out on the driver's side on I70 and wife was doing about 65. The next night the tire & rim on the passenger side sheared off in Utah.

On our 3rd 5vr had a blow out (1st year we had the unit) on the West Virginia turnpike (wife was driving again!). We made it home & took the tire to our Goodyear dealer. He pointed out the bubbles on the inside of the tires (yup, it was Chinese). We contacted the distributor of the tires who reimbursed us and we put Goodyear tires on that unit.

On the Jayco we specifically ordered the unit with G614s. Haven't had any issues to date.

Here is what happened to the Prowler I had. Insurance totaled the trailer.

Had a blow out on a 5 bale cotton trailer back in the '80s.
It sucked real bad.
Nothing since.

Some Youtube tire blowout videos:

As for blowouts, we must be blessed as not only never had a blowout but not even so much as a flat tire.

We had a blowout on our 2nd camper in north Florida coming home. I remember feeling a slight vibration in the steering wheel and slowed down before it blew and it didn't cause any damage. On another note we bought a used boat/trailer about 5 years ago. I looked at the trailer tires and they were Goodyear Marathons. Last year while towing it to the lake we had a blowout. I put on the spare and we were good to go. Thanks to this forum I looked at the date code on the other tire and they were 17 years old. Needless to say I have new tires on the trailer.

I went 10 years on original tires twice. ‘92 Prowler and ‘02 Prowler. My current RV is a ‘12 Jayco and got new kicks 6 years in by the date code. Never a tire issue in 25 years. Knock on Wood.

Six years on original set of tires and no blowouts. I’ve only put 7,500 miles on the tires, check pressure before every trip and limit my speed to 60 mph.

If you have a pinnacle, northporinte or big toy hauler you need to go to G rated tires. E rates are too small and will blow out. Mine are Sailun G637T they are commercial tires for trailers and around 130 dollars each. and if you have a good year product like the marabombs replace them right away they are notorious for failing.

I guess I have been fortunate. 5 years and about 7k miles on Chinese tires and I never had an issue. I have about 800 miles on new Maxxis tires and so far no problems.

Been camping since 2010... never had a flat or a blowout. Most of those years had Chinese tires. I check tire pressures before we leave. On longer trips I check tire temp and hub temp with IR gun at fuel stops.

All my blow outs the tire pressure and temps were good. I have a TPMS. Insurance company on the 4 the blow out said it was a defective tire. They said they were going after the tire manufacturer. Last I heard they couldn't track down the Chinese manufacturer. The 5th tire I found with the broken belt was when I was pulling the wheels to go get LT's mounted. Had that tire blown too, I'd of really been screwed.

First 2 units no issues with the tires. Third and current unit had a set of Towmax from the factory. Pulled about 4K on the first season, plus delivery from the factory.

After sitting for the winter I went out to spring commission and found one belt let go and numerous bubbles on the inside of 2 tires from layer separating.

Had I not seen this I am certain it would have resulted in a blowout from one more trip in the previous season.

A blowout is my worst fear. I too have a TPMS and always run 63 tops with 80 PSI starting my trips. Currently running Maxxis with about 12K on them to date.

I was and still am still sold on the Sailun G637T tires. The only reason I went with the G614 tire was Goodyear refunded me the retail price of 5 Marathons which were starting to delaminate towards the upgrade G614's.

Both are great for heavy fifth wheels.
