Tuners
Looking for experiences/recommendations of tuners for those hauling 5th wheels. I've got a 2018 Seismic and she's heavy. I'll be executing orders from coast to coast this summer and am looking to increase mileage and/or performance of my 2015 Duramax 3500 dually. I'll also most likely be investing in a fuel tank for the bed, to extend mileage.

Tuners
Be careful tuning with heavy towing. The Duramax Allison is a great combo. The Allison is a smart heavy duty trans and will tow heavy loads at stock power levels all day long. Problem is when you turn up the power and don’t makes upgrades to the trans. Talk to ATP noted above. They have a heavy tow tune. I run that now on my 2500.
Much more than a heavy tow tune and you will need to upgrade some internals in your trans...

DP-Tuner has a variety of different Tuners. I had one a 96 F350 7.3. Not sure how they are up to speed on the newer trucks. I think they are out of Tennessee. I now have a 2016 Silverado with a Duramax.

It's hard to say because there are too many variables involved. What I did get is better driving both hooked up and unhooked, plus DPF regenerations happen less often.

MY DP-Tuner had a Economy Mode and your mileage would be plus 10-15% . You can tell them what your expectations are and what you are trying to accomplish, such as, towing versus high performance, more horsepower.

The best way to increase mileage for free is back off the speed and jack rabbit starts. Yeah, I know people behind you make some feel like they have to "keep up", but you aren't driving a sports car.
Slow down and enjoy the ride. My truck is bone stock and will stay that way.

Stock is ok. But a lot of people thank of their trucks like a lot of people on this site thank of their campers. So if there is a way to make it better, why not.
If you use a good EFIlive tuner they can do wonders safely with no other mods. But as always there are other things that will help. One of the things I would highly recommend is an exhaust temperature gauge even if stock. Other things are a larger exhaust, cold air intake, ect.

i have used PPEI for tuning.
Have had it on my 2003 Duramax since EFILive tuning became available.
They can do AutoCal tuning, or the new EZ LYNK tuning.
Kory and his crew are great to work with, and he is regarded as being one of the top diesel tuners in the business. They are even working to get EPA certification on their emission intact tuning

On my Ford I did a DPF delete and used a MiniMaxx with H&S tunes. I saved on DEF but there was no noticeable improvement fuel mileage. Running the tow tune in the mountains it would defuel when ECT got too high.
My '17 Dmax gets better fuel mileage and tows stronger than the Ford ever did. On Dmax's we use HP Tuners and custom tunes (not on the 17)

2500/3500 Duramax diesels only come with 3.73 rears. A gas one will get you the 4.10s.

He is right, that Allison doesn't like anything but stock parameters. My buddy and I both burned up trannys with our Duramax's. He traded his off in 2015 for a new F450 and I did the same. Got 70K on mine and never an issue pulling an overloaded Seismic 4212

I must be very lucky. I bought my 2004 2500 Chevy Duramax/Allison new. Put tuner on after a couple of years. Have towed a fifth wheel since new and have been in every state in the union, most twice including Alaska. Have never had any problems with trans. Maybe its how you drive the truck. I get 22-23 mph hiway. 12-14 pulling camper. I like my truck!!

I would find a shop who knows about towing and tunes. Most shops are 'performance' shops and don't understand high mileage when towing heavy loads. They will give you a ton of power, but, no guarantee of long life.
Unless the tuner is warranteed to replace your engine and/or transmission if it fails due to the tune, then I would not get one for towing.
FWIW, I did have a custom job done on my 09 RAM (it had a bad turbo). Upgraded turbo, full exhaust, emissions delete and tune. It ran well and increased my mileage. BUT, I ran it in the "TOW" setting (basically stock power with better shift points), not the three other levels of higher performance. I knew from others that pushing the Cummins to higher levels required other changes, like new cylinder head studs.
And the little things, like having a layer of soot along the one side of the trailer after a day in the mountains And being the "noisy one" in the campground.
