Under Sink Inline Water Filter

I don't use this inline filter that came with my 5'er. I use a two stage filter for all incoming water, but recently I'm thinking of a use for the under sink inline filter spot. The water line is already cut with a straight hose taking up the space. Why wouldn't this be a good spot for an accumulator? I was thinking of adding one for use in the winter when I'm operating off of my fresh water tank to cut down on the pump on/off frequency. It would be very easy to install since the spot is already there. I was also thinking of putting an on/off valve in the "T" fitting to shut off the accumulator when operating on city water.

I can get to this spot under the sink much easier than getting to my water pump.

Has anyone done this? Thoughts?

edatlanta,

If I understand your question correctly, the problem you would run into is the only water outlet that would benefit is your sink. I believe the accumulator installs just past your water pump but still in the main supply line. This way all of your faucets benefit from the added pressure and supply.

An accumulator can go anywhere on the pressure side of the pump so all water demand would benefit from the accumulator. It doesn't have to be right at the pump. The only thing that would cause a problem would be if the accumulator "T" had a one way valve in it toward the pump. This would act as you describe where only the sink would benefit. I don't see this as the case I am describing.
My pump is hard to get to and this spot under the sink is easy and already set up to insert the filter. Putting an accumulator in this spot would be a piece of cake. I was just wondering if something else had done it.

Definately. If it works I would also consider installing one in the same location as I don't use the OEM inline filter either.

I haven't done it yet since I been out of town. But there seems to be enough interest I guess I need to get busy and see if it will work.

I now know why I decided not to use the inline water filter under the sink (I have one inline coming in from the city water). Getting to those fittings is a real bear, but with all of the interest in using this location for an accumulator I had to get it done. I know I started the thread, so I was sort of stuck.

The attached picture shows the installation. If you look at the picture you will see the white connectors on either end. These are the original and the factory hose was here. This is also where the inline filter would go.

The hose was the shortest one I could find and I am going to make it a lot prettier as soon as I can find the right hose, but I did want to hook it up and see if it would work.

Before I installed it I checked the water flowing from the sink and the shower. I tested each flow for 30 seconds and counted the times the pump would cycle. The shower has the Oxygenics low flow shower head. The sink has the original from Jayco and is not a low flow model.

Before Accumulator: Cycles over 30 seconds

Sink 24
Shower 33

After Accumulator: Cycles over 30 seconds

Sink 10
Shower 18

I definitely will keep it, but I am going to clean up the install, eliminate the loop in the line and mount the unit to the wall.

I must have missed this thread. My thoughts are it is a great place. No worry about freezing as long as the inside is ok. How do you drain it if needed?

I have a larger one that I wanted to install but it would take up to much space under the sink.

Draining it would require removing it, but with wing nuts on either end it is a simple matter to remove. I full time so draining isn't something I ever do. If I was going to winterize I would just pump the pink stuff through it and leave it in place. After I find the right length hose I will leave the hose running flat like it was initially and it would drain in the normal manner, except the accumulator itself would not drain. This model accumulator can be mounted in any position even upside down which would allow it to drain, but there isn't enough room above this spot to put it in the up orientation, so I'm stuck with having to remove it to winterize or pump the pink, but then I don't winterize so I'm ok.
It does work well for such a small unit.
Before I removed the factory hose for this install I turned off the city water, opened the kitchen faucet on cold, and then opened my outside shower hose on cold and lowered it all the way out hanging down. This drained the hose under the sink so when I removed the hose for the install I only had a few drops of water to catch with the towel.

First time I have heard of using this filter spot to install the accumulator. Great idea, I may just order one to save having to unload my storage space to get behind the wall.

That is exactly why I tried this location norty1. I didn't want to have to get to my pump either. I figured it was worth a try and it seems to work fine for both hot and cold water.

Just wondering where the best price is on that accumulator?

I got mine at CW which is close by. It was $46.99. When I got up yesterday I decided "this is the day", so I just drove over and picked it up. I'm sure if you shop around you might find one a little cheaper, but then you have freight to contend with.

CW had the 1/2" male coupling also. It was $1.69. I got the braided hose at Home Depot for $4.18.

I couldn't locate my old household filter that I used several years ago. Still packed away somewhere. I went to Home Depot to buy another. Yipes!! Their water filter prices are out of control. Back on the internet. Bought a Culligan 3/4 inch thread filter housing for $16 and and a 2 pack of carbon filters for about $9.21 Bought an extra package of filters so I got free shipping from Amazon and no tax. Seems like if I can't find it on Amazon it isn't being made.

All you would need is 2 1/2" CTS x 1/2" NPS PEX Female Swivel Connectors and a length
of clear pex. You could cut to any length needed. PEX (cross linked polyethylene) pipe and fittings make plumbing easy and quick. Can be installed in three quick steps. 1 - Cut and clean burrs on pipe. 2 - Insert pipe into fitting. 3 - Tighten collar and turn on water. It's that simple! Fittings can be used with PEX copper, PVC, CPVC or other CTS size pipes.
Should be able to find at big box store or

http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/search.aspx?search=1/2"%20CTS%20x%201/2"%20NPS%20PEX%20Female&page=1

May need to use copy paste
