Under step light

On a 2018 28.5 RSTS is there a switch that just turns on the blue light under the steps and not the light under the awning?

Our 2018 28.5 RSTS only has the one switch for both.

I've got a different rig, but the under step light switch for mine is on the master switch panel, and it says..."OD Security"...or "something" Security.

on my trailer the DS & ODS security switches control the round white scare lights. When I redid my awning LED strip I used one with a remote. The awning light and step light are on the same switch but with the remote I can turn off the awning lighting. I used some LED strip to make a better step light too.

Here is what you’ll need to do. Remove the screws that hold the control panel to the wall. Look at the wiring to the switch that controls both the step light and awning light. If you can find where the step light wire is spliced in, you can disconnect the splice and run the step light wire to a separate switch. Be forewarned, it’s a rats nest of wires back there

I’m in the middle of this mod. Found the wires that control the step light but trying to find a switch that matches the rest in the control panel is turning out to be a job.

Tim

You should be able to get a switch at your dealer, Amazon, CW or any auto parts store. Take an old one with you to get a match (or close enough match)

I tried camping world last weekend. Their selection was less than desirable. I didn’t think about an auto parts store. Thanks

That's easy,... on the side of the switch should be stamped with the manufacturer name. Go to Digikey website and they should have it. I've bought quite a few matching switches from them for our previous trailers and even our new one. I had a lighted switch for the hot water heater go out. The dealer sent me one, it was a close match, but not exact like I wanted. Digikey had them in stock, so I ordered a few extras.

I don't know how your trailers are wired and I don't have my Jayco wiring diagrams with me but I'm pretty sure my step & awning circuits aren't tied together at the panel. Connection is somewhere in the basement or outside wall as I recall.

I replaced my awning LED which had partially failed with this. I can use the remote to turn off the awning and leave the step light on.

For my 377rlbh with the remote control system (can operate slides, awnings, and a few lights) installed in it from the factory this is what I did (if I remember correctly since it has been a while).
  • Exterior light 1 switch controlled step light and awning light
  • There was a single wire that ran from the switch to the remote control unit which is located in the basement behind a small removable panel.
  • Found where that switch wire connected into the remote control unit
  • From the output side of that connection there were two wires. one that ran to the step light and one to the awning light.
  • Took the input connection (wire from switch) and output connection (wire to step light) and connected them together with a wire nut. I also went ahead and labeled those wires while I was in there.
  • Left the awning light wire connect to the output on the remote control unit
  • Now I turn on the awning lights only with the remote
  • Can turn the step light on and off from the Exterior light 1 switch (which I leave on pretty much all the time now even when traveling)

This was my preferred method since I like to use the remote to open and close the awnings so I can see what is going on with them. Since I use the remote to operate them why not us the remote for the light too....

Great info Jason! Why didn’t you post this on the 377 mod thread? Or did I miss it?
