Walmart

I’m new to RV’s and want to plan a trip with an overnight stay. I’m confused if you are permitted to extend sides in parking lot. I’ve got a 36swss and you cannot use the interior if the slides are not at least partially extended. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It's the rest areas where you're directed to parking in lanes that you wouldn't want to use the slideouts. Just park way out away from the store entrance and you're good.

Just to add a note, all Walmarts don't allow overnight stays. A lot of them do, but it's best to call the store first.

For sure. Most times they will suggest an area. Sometimes not too far from where the night trucks are unloading, but the price is right. LOL

Right you are, since retiring I do temp gigs at WalMart Stores and Sam's Clubs, the one's which don't allow overnighters are usually posted and it's usually because of local ordinances. The one's where I've worked never gave the overnighters a second thought except maybe to wave at them as we pulled in that morning. Sam's Clubs are the best though, huge parking lots and the night merchandisers don't leave until 11pm, the morning merchandisers arrive at 4am and so they're a little more secure.

The first time I ever decided to stay in a Walmart parking lot was about 10 years ago when we had a motorhome. One of Walmart's night security guards knocked on our door shortly after we arrived. He said in no uncertain terms that we should not stay there. What he was referring to was the safety issue in doing so. I guess they had numerous problems with RVer's being robbed. I found it odd that we were the only RV in the whole lot. We moved on very promptly!! Would never stay in a Walmart lot ever again........we really have no need to.

I prefer Cabellas or Cracker Barrel's. Both closed at night and much quieter and probably safer. RV Parky app has a list. Not as close together as Walmarts.

I think the Walmart you got evicted from had other reasons than you might be robbed. Anyone that doesn't travel these days without some form of personal security, in my estimation isn't thinking right, or neglecting the everyday newscasts.
30 years ago, I never even thought about traveling armed. But in our case, two old folks in their 70's really need to think about this. I'm not afraid to travel, nor should anyone be. I think of this just like I buy insurance. The "what if" factor.

As long as you park in the back 40 where they want you, extending slides would be no issue. Also, most Indian Casinos have free overnight stays for RV's and many of them are set up to accommodate RV's. I've grown a preference to stay at them when i can. Some even hand out free breakfast tickets when you check in. Thunder Valley in Sacramento is very accommodating for the RV'ers,.

Some Cracker Barrels - trying to get these bigger rigs in is near to impossible.

Part of the issue with those locations that no longer allow overnight parking - some of our fellow campers would literally put the welcome sign out, pull out the lounge chairs, grill and have a grand ole party. And then leave the biggest mess. Very disrespectful to the business and the community.

We have pulled over into empty restaurants (business closed permanently) and parked next to the big rigs.

Another location to consider is casino parking lots. Some have RV parking and out of the way.

Enjoy your camping adventures.

When I extend my slide out in a Walmart parking lot. I make sure I park way out and park in such a way that my slide goes over the curb and grass. That way no one can run into it during the night.

Correct, local laws/zoning may not allow it. The Walmart in Carlisle, PA is like that. Walmart doesn't care but the police aren't shy about putting a parking ticket under your wiper.
