Warning-Capital Grill Fire Hazard!

Used our new grill for the first time. It's the pullout grill with the nice Jayco bottle opener on it. Anyway, was cooking six burgers and had a major flare up. Was only cooking them on low and medium and the grease caught fire, even with the gas off. Luckily it burned itself out but the grill looks like it's 10 years old. I had to finish cooking the burgers on a pan on top of the grill and the grease kept flaring up. Won't use this grill again. Shame, a brand new fifth wheel has a piece of crap of a grill like that. I could've burnt the whole fifth wheel down. Be forewarned if you don't already know. Capital pullout grill.

Could you post a picture?

This grill is not the one that came with my rig, although they both had something in common. Cheap junk.

I'll try to post it tomorrow. We're packing up leaving tomorrow for Nashville as as a stop-over for two nights so I'll have time then.

I was trying to decide if we needed a $29 Weber Smokey Joe, one of the best grills out there. Guess we're getting one.

I can see that happening. Very inefficient grill and design is poor. We used ours for hot dogs once and took forever to cook.

It’s an expensive bottle opener. I’m thinking of replacing it with a drawer.

Retrofit

I took out the Jayco grill and retrofitted with a homemade drawer (picture). Additionally I modified my Coleman portable grill to plug into the propane connector provided for the original jayco grill. I’m much happier.

I used ours that is the same a you have a week ago for the first time. I did not have any issues with the flame but I definitely thought about the flame being a possible issue. The smoke did blow inside and fill up the compartment and if used much would you eventually stain up the entire compartment. I plan on a drawer conversion as well. A sink would have made more sense I think.

Mine has the Capital Grill too but I’ve never used it. I had visions of exactly what happened to you. That and I couldn’t imagine stowing a greasy grill (no matter how well you clean it) to all intents and purposes, inside the RV. I’m either going to pull mine and drop in a two burner cooktop or just do the drawer mod.

Thanks for posting this.

Junk!

That grill is absolute junk and it's also a major fire hazard. If anyone is looking for proof that the RVIA doesn't care about safety or reliabiity here you go.

I too made hot dogs recently on it. Took 3x longer than my gas grill... Smae with some sausages and kielbasa. About the only use I've found is to warm up hamburger and dinner rolls instead of using the oven.

Jayco should recall these and give us all drawer replacements instead.

We're still on our trip and I haven't decided what to do with it yet. I finished cooking the burgers in a pan on the grill slowly. I'm done with it. Probably gonna remove it and look for something to do with that space.

This was the main reason for us to purchase our COLEMAN ROADTRIP grill... It is standalone and runs from the 1LB canisters... Always have it setup at a right angle and away from the POPUP trailer... The ROADTRIP comes with different grills to use for different ways of cooking... Also has a water reservoir for easy cleanup...

The grill comes with a nice stand and a great tote... stows away in the back of my truck bed on trips...

Google image

I always have my MR Buddy heater along for the trips so having a couple of units that uses the same 1lb canisters is great... Always four or so canisters around...

I use that area for my folding table holding my Cuisinart Grind and Brew Bean Coffee maker hehe...

I have used my Coleman Stove with a 8# Tank for years. When I got the new eagle and saw the grill I did some digging and found this company that supplies the conversion from bottle fuel to connecting to your RV quick connect and never looked back.

This part eliminates the regulator and offers you a 12’ Hose.

https://propanegear.com/coleman-road...t-gen-2-12-ft/

They have adapters for others also. The key is that you can’t use the regulator from the stove because the pressure gets regulated twice.

I have a weber 1200 with a quick disconnect for rv hookup. We've used it for two years with our other trailer. I was happy to see the 355 had this grill and I didn't have to carry the 1200 around. Well that's out the door now. That's the one I'm gonna start carrying again. It's an excellent grill.

I only use the capital grill for cooking in pans because I also don't want to put dirty grill back into the camper.

I have the same Coleman Roadtrip grill and it still goes with us for real grill cooking. Mine must be close to 10 years old and I know I've cooked at least 500 meals on it. Thinking about replacing the grates and griddles - the teflon coating is pretty worn.

I love that adapter but $60 seems mighty expensive. Anyone know of a similar, less expensive one?

I searched for years for something to eliminate the regulator. I used to run it on a 8# propane tank. It was a hose that went from a tank connector to the female male bottle threads.

The $60 will be well worth it believe me.

I don't think I'm gonna use mine at all again. In fact, I think I'm gonna remove it altogether but not sure. Cuz I finished the hamburgers in a pan on the grill as it burned off the rest of the hamburger grease, lol. Thankfully, no fire damage other than the grill itself.

I am still toying with the idea of finding a stove that fits here. I want it for breakfasts or maybe to boil things.

I will always use charcoal grill for meats, and now the smoker as shown in a previous post.

Forced to use my grill last night because extra family members showed up.

Never again. Had to stand there because it wouldn't say out on it's own.

Only heated food in foil and it looks like crap.

I had a major fire with this Coleman grill. All of the grease pools in a pan around the burners. Not a good idea.
