Water filter in Residential Fridge

I broke replaced the water filter in the fridge, but must have done something wrong. I had to really push to get it in and heard plastic snap, not sure if anything broke. Went to pull it back out and this is where I know I did something wrong. It appears the hinge cover is also used to pull the old filter out when you raise it. The wife had taken the old one out a few weeks ago, so I was not aware of that function. Now this operation does not work and when I tried to just pull it out it gets caught on this hinge cover door. Anyone else had this issue?

I was able to take the housing off and pry it out when winterizing. So doesn't look like I broke it after all, it just got a little off kilter when I installed it.
