water heater

Is it normal when heating on electric to hear high pitched whine/buzz?

I hope so... ours does that. But, I notice it most often when I'm outside near the water heater access door or the slide window adjacent to the water heater is open.

I might be able to hear it when inside near the water heater, but I don't recall that at the moment. Our trailer isn't here so I can't verify that. Sorry.

Does it change when you open a hot water valve for a second?

Yes this is normal. Beside hearing the current go through the heating element, you will hear a bit of the air escaping through the relief valve for as water heats it expands and needs to displace the air so not to explode.

So, does that mean that if mine does not make whining and buzzing noises it is not working right? Mine heats water though.

Mine "whistles", too. I have found that opening the relief valve for a moment relieves the pressure and stops the whine. But be very careful! The steam/water get very hot very quickly!

If you only hear it when using the electric and not on propane, it's in all likely hood calcium buildup on the heat coil. That is common in areas that have high calcium in the water. Don't think there is any short term need to do anything. I guess in time, the coil would need to be replaced.

I think it's one of those noises that some folks can hear, and when we get to a certain age, we may not be able to hear it....

Like the cell phone tone that the high school kids can hear, but the teacher is older and lost that range of hearing....

The noise is normal

So...If I can't hear it, that means I'm a old coot?

Thanks for the compliment!

Guess I'm an old goat too! I don't hear a thing. But I do have very hot water on electric. Very seldom use gas, except to burn off the dust and insects occasionally!
