Wheel problem?

We are on an 800 mile round trip with the new FW. About the time we got to the RV park today I noticed the temperature on one of my wheels (tpms) had jumped up from the low 70 degree range to the low 90 degree range. When I got backed into our spot, I got out and felt all four wheels and that wheel was definitely hotter than the others. They had all been running about the same temperature up until that point.

I had just been in town with a lot of stop and go traffic, but I don't see why one wheel would jump and not all. I called Good Sam Roadside Assistance and they are going to try and get someone lined up to come check it out tomorrow.

We are planning on heading back home on Sunday and don't want to get stranded on the side of the road somewhere.

Any ideas on what could be going on?

Either the brake is hanging up a little bit, or a bearing. Bearing is easy to check, get that wheel off the ground and see if it has any slop in it. If it spins hard it could be a bearing OR a brakes. Generally if a brake is hanging up you'll hear it sliding or grinding on the outer area of the drum.

Could be a loose wheel bearing or possibly loose wheel lugs. Get the weight off of that wheel and check for any slack or movement of the wheel. Love those tpms - wouldn't pull a trailer without one. Let's you know of issues before they become major problems. Keep us posted on your findings.

Just to clarify, wheel and not tire?
If it's a wheel the previous replies are spot on. If it's a tire then I'd say it's getting ready to fail.

A dragging brake or bad wheel bearing will make a tire hotter. The tire has to work harder at turning the wheel and dragging brake or bad bearing.

But yes, a failing tire can run hotter too.

Could also be the temp sensor shifted on calibration as well.

Well, it was a brake issue. The magnit that acuates the break shoes had broken allowing the magnit to pop out and rub against the drum. Only option we had was to take the brake padd off, cut the wires and remove the broken parts. Will head back home with three trailer brakes instead of four.
I called my dealer and talked to a tech there and that is what he recommended. They will replace the whole hub under warranty next week.

Good deal. At least it was an easy fix on your end and the dealer is going to take care of it and you.

It's very nice to hear the "rest of the story".

Hope it all works out great.

Made 300+ miles today headed back home. Removing the broken brake parts worked. Temps and pressures remained consistent all day.
I can't say enough good things about this TST tire monitoring system. As far as I'm concerned it's already paid for itself.

Thanks for the follow up. It is very helpful to others on the site to see what the solution was.

Update.......made it home without any other issues. I already had an appointment for Wednesday for some warranty work needed that was found on the original PDI. My dealer is going to replace the hub assembly as well at that time. I'm also going to have them check all the other wheels/brakes and adjust all the brakes. The brakes haven't been very good from day one on this unit.

Another plug for a TPMS. If you don't have one on your trailer, I would suggest you seriously consider one. If I didn't have one on my FW, I would not have known there was a problem with that wheel/brake. I might have been sitting on the side of the highway somewhere broke down on the return trip home.
