White AC Shroud

I was at a CG last week and met a fellow Jayco owner that had a 2015 Pinnacle. I asked him if he had any problems with it. He's full time and spends the summers in places where the temp climbs into the triple digits. He said his air conditioners gave him problems. The last time he had a tech out to work on one of them, the tech measured the temp on the black shrouds and was getting 150 degrees. The tech asked if he could paint the shrouds white. The owner said sure. He painted them with white Flex Seal. The owner was amazed at the performance of the AC's since painting the shrouds white. He said they cool a lot better and do not run as long. Makes sense to me. Thoughts?

Me too - I can see a bit of a temp / performance difference but I don't see it making a huge difference.

Makes complete sense...as with any black/vs white in the sun. You would assume that Airxcel would think about that too when designing these things.

I'm sure they did. I really can't imagine it would retain heat so much as to make such dramatic change. They are using black shrouded AC units all through the industry now. Grand Design, Keystone..just about everyone. It's almost considered "chic" now. The vents in them expel that heat rather quickly.

Grumpy, they make them & you can buy a white one for about $157.

That's my point. Guess I needed to be more specific since they have made black and white for years. JAYCO also painted the ones on the 1st gen SENECA's brown to match the full body paint.

What he said makes sense blk vs white, but Airxcel makes them and you would assume they've looked at that when deciding on color.

I believe it would have some effect…. A white roof can reduce the temp of the roof about 30 degrees from a black roof, so if the fins of the ac can exchange heat better with cooler ambient air, it would have some effect on the efficiency of the ac I would imagine. Not an expert and have no basis, just an observation.

I agree. Black heats up more than white in sunlight. Hotter air being pushed through the coils to remove heat from the freon would be less effective than cooler air going through the coils.

Maybe they found that RVs with black shrouds sold better than ones with white shrouds. Damn the efficiency. Get more sales!

I swapped out my black covers for white ones, insulted the cold lines with foam wrap and insulted the cold box with refletix and I didn’t notice any difference in cooling performance. My main AC didn’t work that great before and still doesn’t after, my bedroom AC worked great before and still works great after. A lot of work for no noticeable gain.

Well, instead of insulting them maybe try positive reinforcement…?

The black plastic is cheaper to make than white. Also pigment absorbs the sunlight, not the plastic, so there's some UV protection.

Can you explain further? I would think white would be cooler?

Yes white is cooler but is damaged by uv quicker than black

With black, you can uses more recycled plastics, as the black pigment covers it all up. You cannot add enough white pigment to cover any raw material issues.

As for UV protection, again black is best. Black stops the UV rays near the surface. White allows the rays to penetrate deeper into the plastic. Good way to test this, is to take a couple very small zipties, put them out in the sun. In a few months, the white zip ties will be brittle.

The air cooled volkswagen engineers determined flat black dissipates heat better.

What color were radiators until they started using aluminum?
